Not the greatest trailer, but looks interesting enough for a rental at this point.

A snippet from my spoiler-free capsule review from the Toronto International Film Festival:

The film bears some resonance as a commentary on sensationalism in the media, but as a disturbing character study it's truly haunting. Exhibiting a perpetual wide-eyed intensity, Gyllenhaal (who lost twenty pounds for the role) courts no sympathy from audiences, bringing shades of Christian Bale's titular American Psycho to his darkly satirical portrayal of a sociopath in relentless pursuit of his own twisted version of the American dream. We may have seen glimpses of Gyllenhaal's dark side in his previous films, but this is the actor as you've never seen him before.
4 out of 5.

Saw this tonight, loved it! Lou Bloom (Gyllenhaal) is a twisted sociopath who I'll remember for some time. This movie is funny, dark, and demented. Gyllenhaal killed it. Loved the scenes/conversations with Nina (Russo) at dinner and with his employee Rick before the final big event of the movie.

Speaking of that big event, the car chase was thrilling and intense.

Loved the cinematography too, beautifully shot movie. Great dialogue, Gilroy was channeling Aaron Sorkin.

One of my favorites of the year and likely to stay in my top 5 of 2014.

Another one that I wasn't expecting to be well received. Last week was John Wick.

I think this is topping my list for the year. What a fantastic movie.

Gyllenhaal was riveting here, as a totally convincing sociopath.

Re: Nightcrawler -- D: Gilroy S: Gyllenhaal, Paxton, Russo -- 10/17/14

Interesting movie with a great turn by Gyllenhaal as the bug-eyed protagonist and Russo as a desperate TV news director. The scene between him and her at the Mexican restaurant was creepy.-eek- Talk about a codependent relationship between two sociopaths!

Still, I almost felt like I had seen a similar story to this before.

Spoiler:
Has there ever been a movie before in which a sociopathic lead character manipulated those around her (er, I mean him) and used the opportunistic and sensationalistic media to get what she (er, I mean he) wanted, and even ended up getting away with the murder of someone who trusted her (er, I mean him) and came out smelling like roses at the end, even outwitting the snappy female detective who knew she (er, I mean he) was guilty of a crime but couldn't do anything about it.

I could swear there was a movie like this once, but it doesn't come to mind. Prolly some obscure flick that nobody's ever heard of.

Anyway, for what it's worth, I enjoyed this movie more than Gone Girl.

Re: Nightcrawler -- D: Gilroy S: Gyllenhaal, Paxton, Russo -- 10/17/14

Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a self-informed hustler of sorts with odd social skills, stumbles upon chasing the "if it bleeds, it leads" TV news footage industry in L.A. to make a living. As its central character, Louis is quite an audacious entity, I found myself both laughing and cringing at some of his interchanges with the other characters in the film, but at the core of it all, the film does hook you in, and makes you wonder what are Louis's limits in going after new footage, and it's not a tidy enterprise, to say the least.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

Saw it tonight and thought it was just okay. The cast was good and especially Gyllenhaal played a very creepy sociopath but I dunno something about the film just didn't quite work for me. It felt a bit on the long side and I was ready for it to be over. I will say that car chase sequence was really well done though.

I agree with everything you say here. Although I think I might have liked it a little more than you. Gyllenhaal was riveting. He better get an Oscar nomination for this. Hell, even Russo for Supporting Actress. So glad to see her working still.

I guess I was more interested in it during the first five to ten minutes. Going off that I thought I'd like it a bit more but as it went on it just was sort of ho hum to me. The character was interesting and like I said Gyllenhaal played it well but he was so unlikable and there weren't really any other redeeming characters to make up for that other than Rick but only because I felt bad for his situation and how Louis was treating him that I just lost interest. Plus like I said it felt long, I felt like it could have been trimmed by about half an hour or so.

Saw it. Gyllenhall hands down deserves a nom. for his work in the movie. That said, I think the movie was something that started as mildly interesting and then turned into something more intriguing in the second half. While I am not wanting a sequel per se, I feel as though there is more story to tell regarding the world created. I would be somewhat interested in one that focused on the early days of Russo's character to see exactly what lengths she went to when establishing her career. Also, I think it would be cool if/when Gilroy makes his next project for him to have a

I especially agree with you on this last part. But since I recently said the same about "Fury", I didn't want anyone to accuse me of having a problem with long films. I don't mind the running time of any movie. As long as it doesn't feel forever. This movie did. At one point I said to my friend "What the hell time is it?". Because we had plans to meet up with others for lunch. I usually know the running time for every movie I see but forgot to check with this one. It honestly felt like 3 hours. Like you said, it really could have been trimmed by at least 30 minutes (IMO).

I do agree the movie could have been trimmed. In fact, it almost felt like two different movies with the same character.

I also wanted to say how great I thought this story was. Up until now, I never even knew what a nightcrawler was. So what a terrific and original idea for a film. Just when you lose hope with Hollywood with so many fucking remakes and reboots. I also believe with another director who a few films under his belt, it could have been so much better. I would still recommend this to my friends because of the acting (Gyllenhaal and Russo) and it's story/screenplay.

I saw this on Saturday afternoon.

Fantastic and super dark. Wow. Very much reminded me of Crave, which has some similar themes but is much more "ha ha" funny than this. This was... hard to explain.

Gyllenhaal owned this role like no one else. Has he had a truly terrible role? He seems unstoppable.

Not a perfect movie, but damn fine.

Saw it last night.
Definitely dark. It did seem a tad long,

and his sociopathy crept up, and repeatedly expressed itself surprisingly and suddenly. But initially he just seemed like a bit of an outcast loser.

I can see the comparison to both American Psycho and Gone Girl, but I think I liked this better than both of those (a lot better than AP, and a little better than GG). It brought Network to mind as well.
I liked it but I can see many not liking it. I felt a little 'dirty' watching it. (I liked it a lot more than John Wick.)

Saw this last weekend and absolutely loved it. Gyllenhaal deserves an Oscar Nomination. My only criticism was the last 20 minutes seem to really build up the ending and it doesn't quite pay off. I still liked the ending but it didn't quite match up with the sequences before it.
