It's an arbitrary assigning of one of two similar terms to categorize a movie. Like dinner or supper. Or full figured or big fat fatty.

Repeat after me:

"The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain."

That's suspense.

"Get me to the church on time."

That's a thriller.

tell me how departed movie is treated as thriller movie,
from my point of view it look like crime l drama movie.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Now you're changing the original question by asking about crime dramas. :)

Action happens in a thriller. You're waiting to see if action will happen in suspense.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Suspense is the anticipation, usually over a certain extended amount of time. Thriller would be thrilling which might entail action.

Suspense would be waiting in a plane before skydiving. Thriller happens once the suspense sends and you jump.

Although mostly suspense ("what's in the box?") it can be classified as both since there was a chase sequence or two, as I recall. But ultimately, it boiled down to what/if anything would Brad Pitt's character choose to do. So it's mainly suspense.

I saw your answer, and based on all the replies given to you, maybe, just maybe, you can figure this out on your own. At least just guess based on what you know about the movie and about the the difference between suspense and thriller. I'd argue that Se7en is a suspense thriller, because it contains both suspenseful and thrilling moments. It also is a combination of other genres.

give one example scene from se7en movie, so i can clearly understand.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Suspense - the scene where they're riding out to the desert by the request of John Doe, for an unknown reason, but with John Doe making comments that build suspense.

Thrilling - after the box is opened and Mills has a gun pointed at John Doe's head, how the scene unfolds and ultimately ends.

This scene goes from suspenseful to more of a thriller.

sorry! does n't look like a suspense scene,
otherwise post best example scene for suspense from any movie, not only from se7en.
In Terminator 2, T‑1000 is hunting Sarah Connor & John Connor, is considered as suspense or thriller scene?
In Terminator 2, fighting sequence between T‑1000 & Terminator is considered as suspense or thriller scene?

Brack 07-30-14 03:35 AM

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Not a suspenseful scene? You don't know what's in the box. It's suspenseful. Somerset knows, and knows Mills will kill John Doe if Mills knows what's in the box. How's thay not suspenseful?

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Somerset knows and Mills doesn't. He's thinking on his feet how to get Mills to not kill John Doe. Meanwhile John Doe starts revealing his knowledge about Mill's wife, and Mill's building confusion just adds to the suspense, up to the point where John Doe says he has a souvenir -- Mill's wife's head in the box. If you think this is just idle chit chat, then nothing will be suspenseful for you, and you need to give up on this thread.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Simply look at the actual definitions of the English words "suspense" and "thriller" (i.e. something that thrills or to thrill).

Suspense: "A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen"

Thriller: "To affect with a sudden wave of keen emotion or excitement"

So both cause excitement or are exciting but the difference is a Suspense adds "uncertainty about what may happen"
