Even Paddy Chayefsky wasn't cynical enough to predict reality television. But the movie deserves it's reputation.

An American Family aired in 1971, so I have to believe that Chayefsky was smart enough to intuit that eventually the commercial networks would start chasing more sensational material like that.
Even Albert Brooks parody it in the mid 70's- so reality TV was hardly a new phenomenon in the aughts.

Also you could likely look to Joe Pyne as one of the possible antecedents of Howard Beale's angry man schtick.

Agree. Very odd list. Did the writer actually suggest "We Own the Night" over "The Departed" and "The Living Daylights" over "Skyfall" !? Please! And FWIW, I agree that Scorsese should have won an Oscar for most of his other films first. Still, I think "The Departed" is a great movie. And I think "Skyfall" is one of the top 5 best 007 films ever.

I'll take The Living Daylights over Skyfall any day of the week.

Difference is no one is really fawning over The Living Daylights.

Who the hell's really "fawning" over Skyfall? It does have stunning cinematography, but that's it.

Didn't many critics call it the best Bond ever, or am I confusing it with Casino Royale?

I remember lots of "Mendes has reinvented Bond the way Nolan did Batman" and "it's not just a great Bond movie, it's a great movie."

Departed is seriously overrated. Doesn't mean it's not a good movie though.

The Living Daylights was my favorite Bond UNTIL Skyfall, so I semi-relate.

Re: Somebody wrote an article about "10 Most Overrated Films of all time"

Well looking at IMDBs top 250 i would suggest the following are more apt:

1. LoTR: Return of the King
2. Forrest Gump
3. Life is Beautiful
4. The Departed (I REALLY hate this movie)
5. The Dark Knight Rises
6. American Beauty
7. The Wolf of Wall Street
8. Annie Hall
9. Slumdog Millionaire
10. Crash

I would also personally put most of Tarantinos movies. With the exception of Pulp Ficiton and Reservoir Dogs. His movies are really annoying to watch as they are so pretentious and i am sick of seeing him steal shots from superior movies.

Re: Somebody wrote an article about "10 Most Overrated Films of all time"

I like most of the movies in this article, and didn't think any were really overrated except by a few online. Like Videodrome, it's a well made unique movie, but I also find it pretty boring.

But then I'm around a lot of women pretty often, and so #1 on that list should be The Notebook. I can't even consider it a good movie, much less a great one.

I'd say CR is definitely the best Bond, or at least the best written one.

One of my favorite alltime DVDTalk Facepalm Moments was years ago when someone started an "Pretentious Movies Thread", a several posters jumped in -- UN-IRONICALLY, I might add -- with "Michael Bay movies".

I get that it's lesser Scorsese and of course we'd all have rather Marty won his Oscar for Raging Bull or Goodfellas, but I don't get how someone could HATE this film. It's an inconsequential crime thriller with some good performances. It's maybe forgettable but hardly overrated and nobody's putting it in the pantheon of great crime dramas. Sure it's a lesser Best Picture winners, but this century, I'd still put it ahead of Slumdog, Crash, Million Dollar Baby, The King's Speech and The Artist.

Stupid list due to reasons given. Slumdog may be overrated, is it really "Boyle's worst film?" The Beach easily takes the cake.

I can see that though.
It's not intellectual pretension as, his movies are clearly low-brow and populist and I don't think he's ever made any bones about that.
But at the same time, there IS this air of pretension to all the testosterone swaggering. All those slow motion, walking towards the camera while a fireball explodes behind them shots. It would be one thing if Bay were doing that shit ironically, but I honestly have a hard time believing he's that circumspect.
So yeah- compared to watching someone on screen like Steve McQueen who effortlessly exudes cool, the cool factor in Bays work strikes me as very manufactured and self conscious...in other words- pretentious.
JMO.

22 Jump Street is easily the most pretentious film of the year, if not of the decade.
