Oh there are FAR more misses in comedy sequels than in action films. Think of movies like Aliens, Godfather Part 2, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the King, The Color of Money, Terminator 2 Judgement Day,, Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Kahn and The Avengers. Here we're throwing out titles like American Pie 2, A Very Brady Sequel and The Spy Who Shagged Me as the best examples we could come up with.

90% of everything is crap?

I think a lot of the fans of CV were kids that grew up with it being played every year, and are too young to really remember the original, if they've even seen it at all.

I don't really mind the Naked Gun Sequels, they have less sigh gags and puns, but I don't mind them.

Austin Powers...not so much. The first movie is fantastic. I love it so much, I have it with my James Bond movies.

Austin Powers 2 disgusted me to the point I wanted to punch Mike Meyers in the face for making it. I've seen the opening of "Goldmember", I thought the Austin Powers movie that was just like a serious James Bond movie was smart, but I didn't want to see any more than that.

Christmas Vacation is the best comedy sequel of all time. :)

Agreed, we're having a hell of a lot harder time coming up with good comedy sequels versus anything else.

I enjoyed Ace Ventura 2 a lot more than the first one.

Naked Gun trilogy is pretty solid, sure one might be weaker than the other but it's still inline with itself.

Austin Powers yes 2 and 3 were parodies of 1 … sucked completely.

Pink Panther original franchise was solidly intact tho.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, while Ghostbusters 2 is almost a carbon copy of the original, I believe its both the scarier and funnier of the two films.

Hot Shots Part Deux
The Father of the Bride Part 2
Army of Darkness
A Shot In The Dark.
Waynes World 2
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

all almost as good, just as good or better than their previous installments.

I usually don't like the first comedy in a series enough to go see the sequels, although HOME ALONE, WAYNE'S WORLD and ADDAMS FAMILY were exceptions, chiefly because my daughter wanted to see the sequels. I took her to see PROBLEM CHILD 2 but not to PROBLEM CHILD (she may have seen that with her mom or rented it or something).

I went to see ANIMAL HOUSE on the big screen in 1978 and have yet to see any other National Lampoon movies.

Re: Comedy Sequels : Are They Doomed To Fail?

National Lampoon is just a title that they throw in front of stuff. The movies don't have anything to do with each other, except ones that are a series, like the Vacation movies. None of them are sequels to Animal House though.

American Pie 2 is vastly superior to the first movie and the only one I can continually watch. The rest were pretty much all duds.

Really? I didn't think the first sequel was funny or memorable at all. I thought the first one was a mildly amusing R-rated coming of age comedy.
The sequel also suffered from that classic sequel problem of coming up with a very strained, illogical reason why everyone who was in the first movie had to come back together for the second one.

Summer break after the first year of college was illogical? It would've been more illogical if they all went to the same college. The 2nd one is a fine sequel. Wedding is a awful due to the overly cartoonish Stifler. Reunion was great, IMO.

Agree with all of this. 2 made perfect sense storywise (honestly they all did as far ad growing up goes) and Wedding was weird due to Stifler.

I also hated Wedding because they didn't even acknowledge Oz. All that was needed was 1 line of dialogue saying "It really sucks Oz and Heather are in Europe and can't make the wedding". Or something along those lines.

The 90s ruled comedy just as like the 80s.

Yeah, I didn't like the lack of Oz in that one either, especially for something as important as Jim's wedding.

Ghostbusters 2 and Beverly Hills Cop 2 are not perfect films but they are very good movies.

The first Cop was like a great gritty cop film except the cop was funny. What tony Scott did in the sequel was make a great slick heist film except the cop was funny. Cop 2 might be the best looking comedy ever made.

Muppets are kind of live action, right? Or do they not count?
