Agreed on G 98, my senior year... The Lost World was a bit of disappointment the yr before, but Godzilla was on another level. Haven't given it a second thought since... I looked up a few best of/worst of moments today just for laughs...wow are those clips bad. Late 90's were just terrible summer movie yrs...

I avoided Emmerich's Godzilla and anyone who thought it might be good must have been in a fumed-filled room.

The smartest thing Sony ever did was hide Godzilla's design from the public before release. I think in today's world of Internet spoilers and Twitter that it becomes an even bigger bust.

The saddest part of the '98 Godzilla release was that there were plenty of people, mostly on the internet and probably several on this very forum, who argued in its favor with the usual "It's a mindless popcorn movie! Just turn off your brain and enjoy the ride!"
The same thing that still happens to this very day with a lot of hyped-up, terrible movies that are soon forgotten.

Now, on the other hand, if talking about "Armageddon" that also opened in the Summer of 1998, there was a shit-ton of people online again and again saying "IAMPM! JTOYBAE!" (I don't recall most having "...the ride" at the end of this cliche, though).

HUGE opening for G! WB/Legendary must be incredibly stoked by this. As long as the film has legs as big as Godzilla's we're definitely looking at a sequel.

What bothers me is the reports that there was a decline between Friday and Saturday. That's usually an indication of bad word of mouth. So between that and X Men opening next week, I'm curious how it does in week 2.

Man that sucks. Poor handling, IMO. They can have it subtitled in a week and release it with English dialogue. Many people there will understand it.

Unfortunately this one will go over $200mil. It's the next one that is going to fill the after effects. Can anyone in all honesty say they are pumped for another Sony produced Spider-Man flick in 2 or 3 years?
