Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
Do guys have a thing where the hotness of an actress will bump up their rating of a movie? Because I believe that happens to me all the time and since comic book and sci-fi movies many times have male protagonists the movies in these genres as a whole seem to be higher ranking than average for me.

We tend to get our hotness fix by watching porn.
I tend to go the other way: if the movie is good, I'll remember the hot actress, otherwise the hot actress just slips from my mind very quickly.

I may have went to see movies and enjoyed them more because of the hotness of an actress in my teens and early twenties, but I'm way past that stage.

Finally caught this and I ended up enjoying this a lot more then I expected, but part of it might be because I saw the far worse Ninja Turtles earlier in the day so anything might have been elevated. Anyway, reading through the reviews thread my feelings match most of what others have already wrote; the movie gets by on the strength of Garfield and Stone, but stumbles considerably with the villains. Electro is terrible, and I don't understand what script writer thinks the campy take on the character's origin still works this day and age. And with Harry, it just made me miss the way Raimi's films built up that character and his relationship with Peter as well as with Norman significantly better. I wish the screen writers had much more foresight into planning this out, instead it was mired in junk about Peter's parents.
That said, I enjoyed the action immensely although I didn't like Electro's powers too much. While I had some issues with Garfield's Spider-Man in the first movie, I thought he was great in this one both in personality and action wise. Even though I knew Gwen was going to die, I thought it played out well if not slightly rushed with Goblin showing up. And while Rhino looked dumb, I liked the set up of additional villains although I still don't see how a movie featuring the Sinister Six would work.
Anyway, 3/5 for me and I liked it a bit better then the first movie. While Raimi's Spider-Man looks a bit dated now, I still enjoy the first two movies better then these.

The stuff with Peter's parents felt like more half-veiled shoe-horning to me. While I vaguely know some of the background from the comic, this felt like Sony trying to capitalize on how large SHIELD has become and the recent focus on espionage in the MCU. I could be wrong, but "We can't make them SHIELD agents, so let's throw in a corporate espionage angle ..."

Also, I'm surprised no "Denis Leary is staring at you" memes never took off from this.

Just watched it. Meh. Garfield kills it as Peter Parker, but that's about it. One thing I was confused with. So Peter said something to the effect it had been like 10 or 12 years since he saw Harry. That doesn't make a ton of sense, since they just graduated high school. Harry said he was 20, IIRC. Did I mishear what he said or was that sort of a stupid change that made no sense.

No, you heard right. Norman sent him off to boarding school because he was this massive disappointment... at 10 years old.

Yup, apparently they just knew each other as little kids. That's why Harry made a comment about braces or whatever too.

Watched it last night. If they could have cut out all 3 villains and made it a rom com like Lois and Clark I would have loved it.
The villains really killed the movie. At first I thought they were going to go sympathetic/Frankenstein with Electro. But no. He hates Spider-Man for reasons.
Goblin only existed to kill Gwen, Rhino sucked, etc etc.
Now waiting for Spectacular Spider-Man #1 in 2018.

Redboxed this yesterday and I have to say that it was atrocious. This is worst-of-the-year material. Jaime Foxx and Paul Giamatti should never appear in a Marvel movie ever again. Also, I'm a Hans Zimmer fan but what the fuck was up with that score that just pummels you at every turn? If it's not these lame slapstick cues it's moments of over sentimentalism. Then I see that Pharrell Williams and Johnny Marrs contributed to the score, too!
Anyways, the movie sucked.

Got the Blu-ray and finally saw this, didn't even bother to see it in theaters. It was just OK. Not a big Jamie Fox fan, and this did little to change that. The whole Rhino thing was a joke. It seemed tacked on and added nothing. Should have been a post-credits scene instead since it completely undercut the emotions of Gwen's death, and really was a set up for Sinister Six.

I pretend that when the movie stopped right before he fought Rhino, he didn't go on to win that fight. Rhino kicked his ass up and down the street. That little kid is traumatized seeing his hero pummeled like that.

Just watched it and, although not as bad as I expected, it's massively bloated. And, yeah, the Harry sent to boarding school for being a 10-year-old disappointment was odd. Almost as odd as Harry "being there for [Peter]" when his parents died. They made it sound as if all that happened in their teens rather than when they were in elementary school.
The action was mostly great (except for Peter congratulating himself for saving one civilian - even stopping for a cute chat - whilst many others were obviously killed during the opening action sequence).

Finally saw this and actually rather enjoyed it. Perhaps my expectations were just so low that the good parts (Peter and Gwen) outweighed the bad parts (Jamie Foxx being awful, general plotline bloat).

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
As far as the bloat goes, I wish they just removed Electro completely and took the time to properly establish Norman and thus Harry, as well as Harry and Peter's relationship instead of the awkward mention of their childhood. Raimi's movies did a great job on that (except for MJ instead of Gwen). That would have made the eventual climax more meaningful between the characters. But I suppose they wanted to differentiate the story from Raimi's and not include all that again. I didn't mind the Rhino stuff at the beginning or end at all as a little throwaway (minus the stupid mechanical suit).

I think the reason I enjoyed it was definitely because of lowered expectations. I still don't think the film is great but I don't hate it like a lot of people do. The main aspect of it that I really liked was the stuff between Peter and Gwen. Emma Stone as Gwen was great casting I thought and she was good in both the first film and this one. The villains were all kind of meh to me but I did think that the film had some good action sequences.

One thing I wish they'd done different is actually have Peter give Harry his blood, after preliminary tests they'd do in the lab would show that it initially cured Harry's disease. Then have Harry mutate unexpectedly after-the-fact. It'd help make Peter not come across like a total dick to Harry and also make Peter feel responsible for what Harry becomes.

I think I'll repost this for those just seeing the movie.
Nicely sums up a lot of the problems with this flick.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
finally caught this, and I will admit that my expectations were as low as could be.
with that said, I really liked it. In fact, it's my second favorite Spidey movie behind Raimi's Spiderman 2. I thought the banter back and forth with Peter and Gwen really worked... I loved them as a couple (which is something I never said once about PP and MJ in Raimi's trilogy). I thought the scene with PP and Aunt May where he says that "she's enough" was done quite well, and was touching. I knew Gwen Stacey's fate from the comics, but I still found the scene where she gets it to be well done and gut-wrenching.
I loved the guy playing Harry Osborne. He reminded me of a wormy Leonardo Decaprio and I thought he brought a fantastic range to his character. I wish he looked a little bit better as the Hobgoblin (or green goblin), but that was a minor quibble.
I hate Jamie Fox, so his involvement was a bit of a drag, but I liked the look of the character.
The Rhino was a joke and the idea of the Sinister 6 just being a bunch of villains in power-up-suits is a letdown.
I also like Garfield's Spiderman way more than McGuire's. He's cocky, and brash, and kind of annoying, which feels closer to what the comic book character has always been (or was way back in the day when I read comics).
Sure it's mindless and contrived, but I'M Not sure why this one was universally loathed to be honest.
