Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

The wife and I went to see this yesterday. I thought the movie was freaking incredible. Not really sure how anyone could not like this film, but i am not a spider-man comic reader.

Spoiler:
I was not expecting Gwen to die. It certainly bummed me out a little bit, she was such a likable character. It definitely tarnished the movie for wife, she was really into the love story

There are plenty of legitimate problems with the flick that have nothing to do with its faithfulness to the comic, but I'm glad you were able to enjoy it. I was not.

7.5/10 for me

The Gwen/Peter stuff was just tedious

Electro was cool but underultiised a bit

Everything harry and green goblin was terrible

Rhino was also disappointing

Some cool scenes but overall a bit disappointing in that it wasn't a signficant improvement over the first one

Spoiler:
Really? Didn't her graduation speech scream that she was going to die?

Tedious, terrible, and disappointing, but you gave it a 3 out of 4? You're infinitely more forgiving than I am!

This movie made $700 million. WAY too much.

Enough for another sequel, I'm fairly sure.

Probably, but that is far below previous installments:

Spider-Man: $822M
Spider-Man 2: $784M
Spider-Man 3: $891M
Amazing Spider-Man: $756M
Amazing Spider-Man 2: $708M

And despite making $29M more on OW over the first, Amazing Spider-Man 2 is down nearly $60M in the domestic total. It was very front loaded added to less than stellar reviews. The third already has been delayed to 2018 (initially was going to come out 2017).

IMO, they need to get new writers (especially) and a new director and make the third movie count and be the last one...

It's not that much less.
And $700M is $700M.

With this kind of money, is there a significant incentive for the studios to have better scripts?

problem is Sony will keep churning them out because they don't want to use the rights but their rights are so limited. One major hero and limited selection of villians

It's very Spidey specific universe only, no opportunities for team ups or expansion

And here we go, 1 hour ago:

Sony Launches Female Superhero Movie Mining Spider-Man Universe

EXCLUSIVE: Having pushed the next installment of its Spider-Man franchise out of 2016 and into 2018, Sony Pictures is doing a top-to-bottom revamp of its most important property, insiders say. And that includes a female superhero movie which is being eyed for a 2017 release date, Deadline has learned.

But still disappointing when you consider the sequel made $29M more on its OW over its predecessor. But yes, they'll likely continue to churn them out and the box office receipts will continue to dwindle (at least domestically) unless they get some new blood behind the camera.

This has "reboot" written all over it. So much can happen between now and 2018, no way another Webb/Garfield Spidey gets made.

How many reboots are viable? The 2002 movie still is fine IMHO.

Why should they? People will show up no questions asked for the brand name. Like my dumb ass did .

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Just watched this last night. Wow this was absolutely horrendous. The casting of Jamie Foxx as Electro/nerdy black guy with nerdy white guy hair was terrible. I'm not a big fan of the first ASM it was ok, but worse than the first two movies in the previous trilogy. This one though, the worst spidey movie out of the 5, by a lot. The only time it started to look like it had potential the credits rolled. Gwen out of nowhere running over Electro, there was no good explanation for her to be around during those scenes, some blonde in go go boots is going to jump in the middle of a superhero fight? The opening plane scene was not well done, no build up. I didn't mind the casting of Harry Osborn, that kid looks evil. Peter parker was not a likable character in this one like he was in the first one and it was just Spidey swinging through the city, not enough fight scenes.

Saw it for the second time on Blu-ray and initially gave a 3/5, now down to a 2.5/5 and could get lower as time goes on...

Average rating on here is, rounded up, 3.0/5.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Due to the poor reviews I skipped this opening weekend but just caught it yesterday at the $2 theater. BTW, I haven't been to that theater in ages and after being spoiled with state-of-the-art experiences I probably would have done just as well watching a bootleg on my 19-inch.

That being said, I loved the movie and have decided I'm a whore when it comes to superhero movies. They have to be eight levels of bad for me to really dislike them and I even found merit in Green Latern and Catwoman (neither good by any means but I'll still have a bit of fondness for them). I guess I'm the girl who, instead of giving a pass to every rom com and chick flick, I swoon over comic book adaptations.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Webb, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I watched it last week and it was not as horrible as i imagined, but still no where near the Spiderman movie that we could have if the right people were involved.

The Good:
Andrew Garfield is a good Spiderman and Peter Parker
Electro...to an extent. The effects were not bad and some of the ideas for the character....but only some.
Harry Osborne - DeHann played him nicely creepy. But then he went and turned into the Goblin....ohh dear.

The Bad:
Emma Stone as Gwen. She might look the part, and in the first movie i thought she did well. In this movie she just grated on me. I was more than happy to see the outcome for her here. Emma Stone is turning into one of those actresses that simply plays herself in every role. Boring!!!!

The Rhino - What an absolute waste. Horrible design. Just plain Stupid.

Jamie Foxx as Electro - Anyone else can't help but notice his massive lips in every scene once he was in Electro mode? This is not being racist, the fact that the effects just accentuated his lips was so distracting. On top of this i find him to be a terrible actor. One of those jerks that wins an Oscar by luck and then lets it go to his head. His character was just awful in the movie. Stupid beyond belief.

The Story - What a mess of a story, and most of it no one cares about. Dialogue was awful.

The Green Goblin - What a mess once again. Norman is the Goblin...not Harry. The design was pretty terrible. Maybe not as bad the other movies, but still bad. Why could they not go with that test rig that is shown on some Youtube video footage. That was amazing and was perfect translation.

This is a series that i would love to see go back to Marvel, but that will never happen. Sony will keep beating this series to death. At this stage i think most people have lost interest in what is one of the most popular comic characters of all time. Spidey is now at a stage such as Superman was at when Singer brought us Superman Returns. The ideas of putting out a female Spidey movie and a Villains movie sound really bad. The Villains movie could have potential, but going by their track record it will be a massive waste of time. In order for Spidey into the favour of the public they need to give him a break, spend time getting the right people on board who actually respect the character, forget doing another reboot (we know the character history for goodness sake) and actually make the character dynamic and interesting again.

I doubt any of that will happen any time soon.

It wasn't horrible. But it wasn't that great. I give it a 5/10.

6 out of 10. Nowhere near as horrible as people made it out to be, but still entirely average. Filmmaking by committee at its finest (worst). A ho-hum, overstuffed script that came out mostly lukewarm in the end. Visually it was quite impressive -- it's probably the first Spidey movie that really looked/felt like a Spidey comic -- but that's about the only thing I can really remember from this outing.

Do guys have a thing where the hotness of an actress will bump up their rating of a movie? Because I believe that happens to me all the time and since comic book and sci-fi movies many times have male protagonists the movies in these genres as a whole seem to be higher ranking than average for me.

I.E. my hormones get in the way.
