Just watched it. What an awesome movie.

I must say, as menacing as Ray Winstone was in it, Russell Crowe was far more threatening towards the end (when you see the movie you'll understand what I mean).

Great acting, great directing, great photography, great music, and a great movie.

Aren't the Nephilim and the Watchers technically different things? I thought the Nephilim were the offspring of humans and angels? Or are you telling me that I shouldn't be using Supernatural to study Biblical mythology?

The second part and that's just how Aronofsky decided to incorporate the characters.

In the Apocryphal texts, the Nephilim are the offspring of the Watchers. In the movie Aronofsky meshed the Watchers with the Golems of Jewish folklore and relegated all the wrongdoing of the Nephilim to being done by man.

hanshotfirst1138 08-04-14 11:36 PM

What wrongdoing did they do? Didn't one of them teach mankind warfare or something?

You mean in the movie or in the Bible? In the movie, they intervened and cared for Cain and his descendants when the Creator had not commanded them to do so. Basically they chose to play God. Afterwards, men used what they learned from the Watchers (ironmaking and feats of engineering) to hunt animals and wage war amongst themselves. In the Bible, they saw that women were hot, turned themselves into men, knocked said women up, and gave rise to the Nephilim.

I'm not sure using leftover CGI from Harry Potter was a wise choice for the creatures. Once again, Anthony Hopkins hams it up in his small but critical role. Hollywood really needs to let the man go, he's not the powerhouse actor he once was.

After playing Methuselah and Odin, I don't know what highs are left for Hopkins. Maybe he could play God :p?

He'd need to get a tan. This is what God looks like:

Yeah, I figured Darren just compressed what they were for the sake of streamlining the picture. Imagine if they had turned into giant men and banged the women? We'd still be hearing about it.

Dunno why we don't have an HD thread but I bought Noah on BD last week at Target.

Turns out it has an extra hour's worth of features on a second BD. That BD also has the same features from the first disc too. So watching it all as one is cool.

The 3 added bits are about The Watchers, Noah's score, and The Sounds of Noah. Also has a
"Wooden" slipcover.

Totally worth it. I dug the features added for this Target exclusive. Great BD.

Didn't care for this. Guess i was looking for the traditional biblical epic. 2/5

I'm glad it wasn't traditional, maybe that's why I liked it a lot. Don't care to see a director like Aronofsky do something traditional, especially a Biblical story.

4/5 for me.

Thank you for reminding me of the Golems. I knew there was some mystical rock creature which this evoked, I just couldn't remember which.

I finally saw this about a week ago and enjoyed it for the most part but the film really takes a nose dive in the last 40 minutes or so. It just comes to a screeching halt once they're actually on the ark. Everything up to that point though was quite enjoyable.

I saw it a week ago.

It didn't occur to me until today that Zohar was supposed to be brimstone.

I hadn't seen this since the theater and my wife and I finally had a night free to sit down and watch the Blu-ray (her first viewing). I think I liked it even better the second time and she really dug it, too. Definitely worth repeat viewings for me. I have the Target exclusive that has an extra feature about The Watchers and was disappointed that it was pretty much about the special effects, not the research. I was hoping it was about the research to help people understand the Midrash work they did.

Impulse rental from Redbox. I really enjoyed it. I'm not a religious person by any means, but it was mostly well acted, had great special effects, and didn't feel preachy in the slightest. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it, but shouldn't since its director Darren Aronofsky is a fantastic filmmaker.

His character and script were kind of blah. Not his fault.

I actually liked Hopkins in this. He left me with a craving for berries.
