Sounds like this is a 'do over'...entirely new cast of characters except for David, etc. Prometheus now serves no real purpose other than introducing us to David I guess. I think they screwed things up when they intentionally moved Prometheus away from being an 'Alien' movie - it didn't deliver enough on the Alien side of things, and wasn't a good enough film on it's own.
I'll give Ridley another crack at it - but this one better deliver!

EXCLUSIVE: Katherine Waterston, who co-starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, is set to star in Alien: Covenant, the Ridley Scott-directed sequel to his Prometheus. In what will be the biggest role of her career to date, Waterston has been cast as the lead, Daniels.

I had this idea for the sequel, never got a chance to write it down, but basically it boiled down to Shaw and David going to the Paradise planet and finding the remaining engineers living like a tribe in the Amazon, having gone primitive because they played God and they got their comeuppance by their own creations. But because they brought one of the ships with the vials the natives find it and boom you have aliens on the hunt.

Why don't they try something different and have a male lead? Breaking new ground already right there.

I agree that actually having a male lead for a change would be a good thing. They seem to be stuck with this female symbiotic relationship between women and the aliens. Ok, we get it. I personally found the Shaw character quite annoying and a poor replacement for Ripley. Seeing a male character take center stage would give it a little air of freshness. Also, why not add in a new biggie larger male Alien that we have not seen yet. We have seen the Queen Alien, why not a King or Emperor Alien. Not much bigger than the Alien Queen, but more lethal. Maybe a storyline could be that this was the original product of the Alien species and the Engineers have it under lock and key on Paradise. They are extracting the black liquid seen in the vials from the Emperor Alien and this is what they are using as both a bio weapon and also to play God in experimentation on creating new lifeforms. Maybe Shaws ship crashed lands on the Engineers home planet and sets about the escape of the creature. We arrive at Paradise in the middle of the war between the Alien(s) and the Engineers.

Noomi Rapace Won’t Return for ‘Alien: Covenant’

Director Ridley Scott confirms Noomi Rapace will not return as archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw, leaving Michael Fassbender‘s murderous android David the only character from the last film set to return. He’ll be joined by some new characters, though, including one played by Katherine Waterston.

That disappoints me, I really liked her character and hoped to see her in the sequel.

Disappointing. She was definitely the main draw of the first movie.

She left no impact on me at all. None of the human characters did. I guess she stood out because her actions were the least retarded.

So there are 3 writers already attached to this :
First draft : Jack Paglen (Transcendence)
Second draft : Michael Green (Green Lantern)
Revisions : John Logan (Gladiator)
I have a bad feeling about this.

Well that was a dumb fucking move. I expected a sequel to continue the story line started with Prometheus...

Maybe Noomi didn't want to return? Was she contracted for sequels?
