Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
I wonder, if Terrence Winter were to win for script, does he thank Jordan Belfort (the script is adapted from his book)? Would that be kind of like winning for writing a movie about Helter Skelter and thanking Charles Manson?

The same argument could also be for American Hustle
Since Wolf is based on Beltford's book, the writer may consider him a creative collaborator and faces the delimma of whether or not it is in bad taste to thank him. But I'll be surprised if Wolf wins script so we'll never know. |
Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
This might be a very long broadcast. Sounds like alot of singing performances tonight (hooray!). Can't wait for Bette Midler. When I think great films, actors, and directors, I think Bette Midler.

Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
My predictions:

Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
I'm wondering why, in this day and age, that the acting categories are still separated by gender. I know this is pretty common among the entertainment award shows (music included) but it doesn't make much sense to me. Is there any reason we can't compare the acting of a man against that of a woman? Why do we only compare women vs. women and men vs. men?
Plus whenever I see an "actress" interview, she refers to herself as an "actor." It seems the only time that term "actress" is acceptable to them is when they might be receiving an award for it. Imagine if the acting awards had separate categories for the different races. It would never fly. And it's not like sports where the men and women have different inherit abilities in general. Plus it would shorten the show by two awards. |
Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
Since the Academy is made up of 62 year old white dudes I decided to ask my Dad who he thought would win since he too is a 62 year old white dude. He said "who gives a fuck, The Walking Dead is on tonight."

Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
I'm rooting for Gravity since that is the only Best Picture film I saw.

Also, you don't need the Bechdale test to tell you under a uni-sex award, men will still receive about 90% of the nominations (at least). Part of the Oscar fun is watching handsome men and beautiful ladies dressing up, who wants to reduce that number by half? I think if anything, they should have a third and fourth acting category: Best Supporting Supporting Actor/Actress, for people who play stuff like Cop #2 and Scared Motorist. |
Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
Wow, Bill Murray in a tux. I'm surprised he's even there.
|
Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)
Bill should have used a bit of make up.
