I think the write-in campaign for The Hobbit will succeed and we'll see an astonished and grateful Peter Jackson accepting.

I'm hearing more and more buzz about a GRAVITY upset. So I'm going with that. Apparently a lot of voters were turned off by the violence in 12 YEARS, but it could still win because the voters that decided to not vote for it probably split their votes between GRAVITY and AMERICAN HUSTLE.
Still, the buzz reminds me a lot of the year when CRASH beat out BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, and also the year when SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE beat out SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

To me, American Hustle is a half-dozen terrific performances in search of a point. A couple months after having seen it, I can't recall the plot of the movie with any real interest.
Gravity was, to me, the most entertaining of the nominees. Basically, the action beats of a summer blockbuster focused way down, and told in 90 minutes. It will win the tech awards and Best Director.
12 Years A Slave is a very serious film and not much fun to watch at all, but it is Important, and that should be enough reason for many people to vote it as the standard bearer for film art in 2013.
Let me add that I really hope Lupita Nyongo wins Best Supp Actress.
<-- really, really beautiful

I haven't seen it (and I'm not overly interested in it to be honest) but I get the feeling Gravity will take home the title. I'd like Her or The Wolf of Wall Street to win personally but I don't think either will take it. American Hustle is really good too with some good performances but I don't think it'll win. Might get some wins in other categories though.

My gut tells me American Hustle will win though I'm pulling for either Gravity or Captain Phillips to take it.
I think the Best Picture and Best Director will be split. AH will win best picture while Cuaron will get director.

That last one still surprises me. Saving Private Ryan is exactly the kind of shallow tripe the Academy normally goes for.

Ugh, I agree. I hated "Saving Private Ryan". "Elizabeth" should have won Best Picture that year. As should have Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. But didn't mind "SIL" and Paltrow winning too. Don't even get me started on "Crash" over "Brokeback".

On a side note, Kaminski's work on this film still drops the jaw, even though his shutter staccato technique has been copied endlessly in countless films.

Re: What will win Best Picture? (2014)
Going to go with a Gravity upset here. Just like last year the thought was, while maybe more people thought Lincoln was a better film, many also didn't like it, so it was more polarizing (New Oscar voting rules).
While maybe Argo didn't have as many 1st place votes, it got a ton of 2nd and 3rd place votes.
I think the same situation here is happening. 12YAS might get more #1's, but it is polarizing and Gravity will be pick up enough #2's and #3 votes to pull the upset.

Gladiator being nominated, let alone winning Best Picture, was one of the lowest points in the history of the Oscars. No love for Requiem for a Dream or Almost Famous, but of the movies nominated, Traffic was probably the best (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was good too).

Re: What will win Best Picture? (2014)
I've seen 9/10 of the nominees. I know Gravity and 12 Years a Slave are considered neck and neck front-runners, but ultimately 12 Years a Slave will win out. Why? Because it has an "important message" ("slavery is bad"), while Gravity does not.
