I assure you that O'Toole doesn't mind.

Because he's dead.

Anyway, relax people. So an anonymous dude said he was "stunned" by a film he characterized as a video game. Move on.

I'm actually getting Barry Lyndon on Blu-ray in the mail today.

Shit, and here I was thinking that Gravity had actors, sets, costumes and makeup.

Am I wrong?

Loved Up. Thought TS3 was unnecessary. Thought it was cute that they were included in BP but was certainly not expecting them to win.

Unlike those movies, I think Gravity could have won because it's not all animated and was a fucking marvel.

That movie is ancient. Are you also getting your walker and wheelchair delivered today too?

I actually expected another performer after Travolta's intro. "Who the hell is that?" Glad that Ellen made a polite correction after the song was sung.

Yeah that makes sense, because Peter O'Toole was the very picture of temperance, sobriety and restraint.

Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)

One of these years maybe the producers of the telecast might actually figure it out : while performing the Oscar-Nominated songs is a pretty cool thing sometimes (and I wish they wouldn't heavily edit the songs down), having performances like Pink doing "Over The Rainbow" or Bette Midler do "Wind Beneath My Wings" add nothing to the telecast but length.
I would have been delighted if those two number were cut in exchange for giving the honorary Awards on air. Angelina's speech looked very touching and Steve Fucking Martin? Hell yes, I want to see him accept his honorary award on air!!!!

To be fair, O'Toole lived as long as he did (unlike some of his contemporaries like Richard Burton) because he stopped drinking at some point along the way.

A lot of people fucked up while reading the teleprompter last night. Tough to tell if it was just shitty speakers or something was off with the prompter.

Did not say he was not a douche, but he ONLY lived 35 years longer and did not leave behind 3 young children either. And IMO had easily just as good if not better career than PSH did. Believe we should be basing this on career even more so than how the guy was to get along with last I checked.

The Best Picture winner almost always at least gets nominated for Screenplay. I believe Titanic is the last BP winner without one, 17 years ago.

I know other people have already replied, but computer animation uses a lot of the same techniques that they do in film.

A computer animator uses a program to create props, sets, characters, etc.

Really their work has more in common with a sculptor then an artist or animator.

They have texture and surface artists that create and place a more detailed illustration onto of the objects. The combination of these two jobs help create the visual style of the movie. They are make up, set dressers, costume makers, etc..

Then They have lighting technicians to light the sets, just as they do in live action.

They have camera operators to choose which lens they want to use to capture the moving footage, again, just like they do in live action.

Then the animators get to work and actually move the props, sets, and characters to create the illusion of motion.

Once all these steps are done, then they move to all the standard techniques that they would in film, i.e. sound mixing, sound design, editing, etc...

The difficulty that a lot of computer animators face, more then live action counter parts is that they have to create something from nothing. The advantage they have is they generally have more time and more control over the objects and can be very specific.

Now if you still look at a film like gravity ( or some people say avatar ) and think it's just a video game ( or cartoon ) and not a film, then that's fine, but to assume it's easier, or they are not as talented as their live action counterparts then you are being very ignorant.

A computer isn't a magic box that makes animation. It's a tool like any other tool any other technician would use. And I am generalizing what animators do, their work is a lot more complicated, but I feel it may go over your head.

Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)

I thought the highlight of the night was the Pizza bit. I just liked it because having worked at the studios I know how down-to-earth a lot of the actors really are and I think them clamoring for pizza showed a bit of that. I've seen incredibly rich and famous actors in the cafeteria bitching when the price of coffee went up $.15.

Re: The 86th Annual Academy Awards (2014 Discussion)

I wonder if we'll ever go back to 5 Picture nominees. Or maybe limit it to 6. It seems a waste to have such a high number as 9-10 if half of them are always going to go home empty handed.

Also, how about adding a spoiler in post 451?

And it hasn't really worked as intended (the idea was that expanding the field would allow it to include more films that "people have actually seen") aka the "Dark Knight" rule.
