Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) is having a bad day. She’s totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house. It’s time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she’s broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Susan Sarandon), is her only option—with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shotgun, it may be just what Tammy needs.
Also starring: Mark Duplass (The League), Allison Janney, Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd & Kathy Bates

Is it me, or is she just playing the same role in every movie? This just doesn't leave me wanting to see it. Maybe a rental.

I know a lot of people love McCarthy's humor, but it doesn't quite work for me unfortunately. Was let down by Bridesmaids after hearing rave reviews and really didn't like The Heat (not that the success/failure of a movie completely weighs on the shoulders of one actor). I'll probably still see this, but with hampered expectations.

I think she's funny, although I've never seen Mike & Molly.
Bridesmaids, Identity Thief, The Heat, she's 3 for 3 with me.

She is very popular. I enjoy her work quite a bit. She'll get work for a long time in Hollywood. She can pull off the Farley stuff. It plays well.

Melissa McCarthy's shtick is old already if you ask me. She's been put in starring roles since she took off by standing out in Bridesmaids but honestly the films she's done after that have been shitty. Tammy looks god awful from the previews.

Didn't mind The Heat. But her career would be dead if she lost weight. Her entire act is built around being a giant, overweight buffoon, much like Chris Farley. Unless she chooses to immortalize herself through a speedball overdose, she's destined to become the next Rob Schneider.

Yeah, really even Farley's career when you look back on it isn't all that great. He had Tommy Boy which a lot of people love but that's his main claim to fame other than SNL. Black Sheep was okay but sort of felt like it was trying to recapture the success of Tommy Boy.

I think it was on the Showbiz Show with David Spade which used to air on Comedy Central that Spade quipped people asked him before Farley died if they were going to make a sequel to Tommy Boy, and his response was always "We already did. It's called Black Sheep."

Chris Farley was smart enough to know his schtick was only funny when paired with a skinny partner. The Heat worked because of it but this doesn't seem to have that combo. Fat man in a little coat is only funny when there's a little coat.

Yes, she does. And it's her own fault at this point...she's popular enough to start picking her own projects. I'm sure these roles are fun for her, but she's going to be forgotten in five years if she keeps playing the same character over and over. Then again, maybe she knows that and wants to capitalize on her profits while she's still in demand.

I am going to second the Film Drunk article on this film. All I know about Tammy is that it's about some fat chick who can't ride a jet ski, dances to Gangsta's Paradise with a bag over her head, and has a love for fast food pies.
I enjoyed McCarthy's role in Bridesmaids. However, I'd rather put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger than have to sit through Identity Thief, The Hangover Part III, and The Heat again as her shtick has already ran its course.

Yeah, she really needs to stop playing obnoxious, slobby white trash characters. I think she's actually pretty talented, but if she wants to foster any real career longevity, she needs to start picking different roles pronto. Personally, I loved her in Bridesmaids, didn't care for her at all in Identity Thief, and thought she was pretty good in The Heat. Tammy looks like an even more obnoxious, even more white trashy role than Identity Thief, so that doesn't bode well for it in my book. It a shame too. There really aren't any big female comedic stars outside of television - I mean, no real female equivalents of, say, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, or Jim Carey.

I loved the scene in The Heat when Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy finally come face to face in that coffee shop and go toe to toe after all the years of will they/won't they ever make a movie together. What an iconic moment.

This movie comes out in a day and there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic.
How bad could this thing possibly be? And if it is indeed bad enough where the studio wouldn't screen it for critics, why would they open it for the July 4 weekend?

Cuz who gives a shit about the critics when it comes to a mainstream movie?
From the reactions I've seen when the trailers play... Seems like people want to see this.

I have a free preview pass for tonight. I am not sure if I'm going. I like Melissa but the trailers aren't very funny.
