What about the opposite effect that Bruce Lee's death had on the martial arts film world? As in, so many attempts to find the "next Bruce Lee" that we inadvertently got a lot of new actors with new styles. I don't think it's a stretch to say that had Lee not died, we'd never have Jackie Chan, who I believe has made far better movies than Lee did. Oh, and I'm not trying to say it's a good thing that Lee died, it was quite a tragedy and we were deprived of many great films as a result.

River Phoenix is an interesting choice, because he wasn't quite yet 'great', but you could see the potential there...it's probably not a stretch to think he would have become a better actor than his brother - and his brother is a pretty damn good actor.

Alexander Fu Sheng. Died in a car crash in Hong Kong at age 29.

James Dean is the poster boy for died too young. A enormous portion of his aura is built around the fact that he died so young. That's partially why he's so iconic.

I would argue the opposite. Shaw Bros., with directors Chang Cheh and Lau Kar Leung leading the way, made some of the greatest martial arts movies ever after Lee's death. Not to mention Yuen Wo Ping, Ng See Yuen, Lee Tso Nam and Sammo Hung, to name a few. Angela Mao, who played Lee's sister in ENTER THE DRAGON, did some of her best work after Lee's death, including WHEN TAEKWONDO STRIKES (which was in production around the time of Lee's death) and BROKEN OATH.

Most people here may not be familiar with him, but I am a big fan of Japanese musician/producer Nujabes, who died in his early 30s in a car crash. He did some of the music for Samurai Champloo and released several jazz/hip hop albums featuring Japanese and American rappers.

That was a great loss, too. Ten years to the month after Bruce Lee died. And right in the middle of filming one of the greatest kung fu movies ever, 8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER, for director Lau Kar Leung.
