The way Oscar Isaac's character played it. I'm guessing that the lack of information or update for something like that, isn't a stretch.

Saw this movie last night. Maybe I'm just old and cranky, but it didn't really impress me. I thought the plot was pretty predictable and was also struck by the over-the-top misogyny of the whole thing. But it looked nice and the performances were solid.

Are you referring to the misogyny shown by the characters? Or do you think that the film's ultimate message was misogynistic? If the former, then I think that was sort of the point. If the latter, then I can't say I agree.

I haven't been able to unpack that yet. Certainly the characters displayed it, but I'm unsure if I think that means it was represented in the film's overall theme.

I really liked this. The only 2 candidates I have for best film of 2015 so far are Ex Machina and A Most Violent Year. Both of which star Oscar Isaac. Hopefully I'll be able to include that other film of his coming out later this year on the list as well.

A most Violent year came out in 2014....on 12/31 for a regular release type of thing. Though it wasn't released it some locations like where I am till like 2 months after. Technically it's a 2014 but... *shrugs shoulders*

AMVY was 2014 the same way American Sniper was. 2014 for awards purposes, 2015 general release, so you're correct that it's a 2014 flick.

Just got back from Ex Machina; I really liked it. The pacing was slower but the twists good and message seemed insightful.

I know it was technically 2014. I used to be like you though. For 2012 or 2013 best films of the year thread I took a bunch of people to task for adding films from the wrong year. But then I realized if I see a great movie but its BARELY not the right year, I don't want to exclude it based on a technicality. I couldn't add it in 2014 and even though it got a festival release in 2014 I'm gonna add it to my 2015 list, because a film that good deserves to be mentioned as opposed to being stuck in "what year it really came out in" limbo.

I thought it was above average, but it's not some sci-fi masterpiece. I liked the pacing, but was a bit letdown by the finale. Maybe I was expecting more. Isaac was terrific. I think he's a potential star, similar to Bradley Cooper and Chris Pratt. I think Garland is definitely a director to watch for. Looks like "Annihilation" is his next film.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but Alex Garland isn't great with endings (at least the ones he's written), but as long as it doesn't go off the rails, all good.

I don't know what this movie is about except that it involves scientists and creating an android but it looks good so I will check it out.

I'm glad it didn't go that way. I've seen enough of that happen in movies. Rocshemp saw that kind of nature to it via the trailer but I never saw it.

I think A24 was hoping for a bigger boost this past weekend with the expansion.
This played out like a long, higher budget episode of Black Mirror, and while a tad slow was really enjoyable. Props for them working in logical tasteful nudity.

Saw it last night and thought it was great. I'm not sure if it'll make my own top 10, but it was thought-provoking and kept me guessing. I honestly expected
so that might have affected my experience with the film.
Yeah, that's kind of what I took away from it as well. I felt like the character of Nathan was responsible, and subtly criticized for that.
I agree. It's a bit complex, and kind of depends on the person's own chances of seeing it within the "original" release year or when it gets a "wider" release.
For me, if it's a new film and I see it at my local film festival, I consider it a release for the year in which I saw it. If it gets a wide release the following year, I don't hold it against anyone for adding it to that year's year-end list, either.

I saw this a couple of days ago. I enjoyed it, though I think reviews may be overrating this a bit. While well done, the story wasn't anything new. There were teases of plot wrinkles, but in the end the most surprising thing was the lack of surprises. Though maybe I've just seen too many of these kinds of movies
I did really like how the isolated environment helped create this atmosphere of growing tension and menace. I wonder how many of the audience were disappointed since the trailers suggested a killer-robot thriller, while most the movie was dialog.
One thing that maybe I missed ... did Nathan have any other staff besides Kyoko? If so, where were they hiding? If not, who kept that huge place clean? I know, it's just a movie ... but when a movie invites you to think about things, these are some of the things that come to mind
There seems to be a spate of these "AI developing consciousness" movies in the last couple of years. "Her", "Chappie", "Avengers: Age of Ultron". I saw a few other good ones very recently on Netflix: "Automata" (with Antonio Banderos), "Eva" and "The Machine". The last two in particular seemed very close to the ideas and story of "Ex Machina". And I thought it interesting how each went for a different tone and ultimate direction from essentially the same setup. "Eva" went for touching melodrama while "The Machine" becomes the kind of thriller that the trailers "Ex Machina" deceptively suggest (but with a cool retro 80's style).
