Better than Gates McFadden playing Cathy Ryan as a Brit in the opening of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, at least.

I liked it for the most part. I thought it moved at a pretty good pace and I was never bored by it. The action scenes that they had were pretty well done with the exception of the hand to hand fight at the end. Yet again, close shots, rapid editing and the shakey cam ruin a fight scene. Overall I'd give it about a 3.5/5. I liked it but I don't think I would buy it unless I want to "complete the set" so to speak.
On another note I found it interesting that the showing I was at was mainly people in their 50's and 60's and only two or three in there 20's. I guess the Jack Ryan name really doesn't hold much value in the younger audiences since he hasn't really been relevant since Harrison Ford played him.

JACK RYAN passed the $100 million mark over the weekend - although 2/3rds of that is from overseas. I wonder if a sequel is completely out of the question now - I wouldn't thought it possible a few weekends back. I guess it was #1 in France this past weekend, where it has the (much better) title of THE RYAN INITIATIVE.

I heard that the studios mostly care about domestic grosses and international revenue is just a bonus.
Who knows? Maybe Ryan's home video and digital download sales will be good and that will entice a sequel.

It's had some pretty good weekend holds. It's just that the opening weekend was so soft. I think it can reach $50 mil US. That's far from impressive, but solid considering it only took in $15 mil opening weekend. Maybe that'll be enough to get them to try a sequel.

I sincerely feel sorry for them then, the overseas market deserves much better than that. Anyone does.

True, but the strategy DID work. While it only made $67 million here in the states, it made a whopping $237 million overseas - ranking it in the top 25 in worldwide box office for 2013.

I watched this last night and it was just ok. Nothing special. It is better than Sum of All Fears but that's not saying much.

Now available on Netflix!
I don't have much to add beyond what has been said already. Even as a suspense flick it was a little lacking as it hit all of its beats but left little for the viewer to try to solve. An enjoyable paint-by-numbers.
I really expected
When that didn't happen, I knew there weren't going to be any plot twists to engage the viewers.
I guess the answer is "because the character is not as popular" but why is it nobody cares about the non-continuity/time liberties taken with Jack Ryan the way they do James Bond?

Yep'. Caught it on Netflix.
It was mostly what I expected. Straight forward. Not many (any?) big spy-movie twist and turns. It was very small and disciplined, right up to the end.
Branagh's character's was very interesting.

Thought the same. Nothing groundbreaking by any means, primarily interesting for the novelty value of the fact that Olivier 2.0 is now making comic book action pictures and spy thrillers. It's solid, engaging, fun, and well put together. Knightley, Pine, and Branagh are decent. Costner is Costner. As it's directed by Branagh, the occasional theatrical flourishes, bright colors, and literary and historical allusions are interesting in what's otherwise fairly assembly line. Not going to change the face of cinema, but a functional and entertaining popcorn flick. Shame it didn't do better at the box office, more adventures in this particular universe and a little time to pin down who's best at what could've been quite fun. It's a little hard to make Ryan younger when his character is fundamentally more intellectual than action hero, but they have a good go at it, and find fun stuff for Pine to that generally isn't too outlandish. Not much of the usual Clancy tech, but I suppose that the world is so digital now that it's hard to find hardware to dazzle audiences.

I also watched it on Netflix and liked it. I thought it was well-done and seemed a bit "Mission Impossible" like with the way the people in it worked together as a coordinated team. The one thing I don't get is why it was a "Jack Ryan" movie at all. This movie is not based on a Tom Clancy novel and it changes everything so much that the main character is nothing like the established Jack Ryan character. They could've named the main character "Ryan Jackson" and not only would it not have affected anything else in the movie, it even would've made more sense that way as just an original standalone movie not linked to anything else.
But, anyway, it's still a good action thriller that's worth seeing.
