RIP to a tremendous actor. If you haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm, you need to do so.

Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
As far as I'm concerned he is unequalled as an actor in cinema, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Absolutely shameful that he never won a competitive Oscar out of 8 nominations.
Feels like a perfect night to watch The Lion in Winter again. |
Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
:rip: Will look at the Lion in Winter in his memory.

Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
Somehow I thought he was older than 81. Sad to see a legend go. RIP.

well since you list Maryland as your state, the AFI still does 70mm restrospectives every year

Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
The best actor I've ever seen. His least performances were hypnotic. I've seen more than one critic say that his roles in Becket and Lawrence were the best male performances ever filmed. An all-time startling talent.

Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
'Lord Jim' is also worth seeing in 70mm - his blue eyes just sear and are utterly mesmerizing.
RIP |
My old film studies teacher always used to describe truly brilliant actors by saying they could "act with their eyes. O'Toole is just such an actor, he could could convey so much with just a look, and that's not even counting his body language. You could see that character and all of what Lawrence was and went through in O'Toole's piercing blue eyes.

:rip: The Stunt Man has always been a favorite of mine. Time to watch it again.

Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
Yeah I saw it at the AFI a few times this year, twice in 70 mm and once with the new DCP. For the second 70 mm showing I went just to be in the theater with it, even though I came in late and rested for a bit in the theater I just wanted to be there while it played.
And reading through this thread, that reminds me that I have My Favorite Year sitting here from Netflix, which I got for Joseph Bologna. I should see it soon. |
Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
I was just watching King Ralph. I know it's just a goofy comedy, but O'Toole gave it a sense of class, and he was pretty funny in it as well.

Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
Just watched The Man From La Mancha with my mom two weeks ago. One of my very favorites... my mom didn't like it :(
RIP Mr. O'Toole |

When did I realize I was God? Well, I was praying and I suddenly realized I was talking to myself. |
Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
I don't know how many of you have seen NIGHT OF THE GENERALS (1967), but it's quite an underrated WWII thriller, in which O'Toole plays a high-ranking Nazi general who also just happens to be a serial killer of prostitutes. His LAWRENCE co-star, Omar Sharif, plays the military officer investigating the murders. I saw it on TV a long time ago and thought it was superb.

How right he was. :rip: Peter O'Toole |
Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
Early film (1960) that is pretty good with O'Toole in a supporting role

I thought he was good as the asshole King in "Stardust" and the dirty old man in "Venus". :D
I predict this thread will not be as big as Paul Walker's thread. :( |
Re: Peter O'Toole dead at age 81
I hate the way news headlines work. It's not "Peter O'Toole passes away at 81." It's "Peter O'Toole dead at age 81." Like he got hit by a fucking train or something. Or knocked back a few too many rails and have a whoopsy moment.

An old man dying from a long illness is never as sexy as a relatively young man dying in a fiery inferno.
