Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (McKay, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Re: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (McKay, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
I thought this was pretty damn solid considering how awesome the first one was. Not as good, but still a nice follow-up. The absurdity level reached new heights with the brawl. I enjoyed the cameos, except for one which completely deflated the momentum the film had.

Saw it. Funny, but I didn't find it deserving of all the praise. Seemed really derivative for the most part. I thought the big brawl at the end was cool.

7/10 not as good as the first but still very good. I do think cutting out bits of it in the middle could have helped the pace, it did drag a bit.

If Ron Burgandy was a modern day character, I suspect he'd been diagnosed with some mild form of Asperger's to explain his behaviors. His merry band of newsmen, well, some more so than others.
"Anchorman 2" is funny in spots, but it's not consistently funny, and the cringe-inducing spots come off flat (Brick's subplot elements are totally hit-and-miss). The dialogue is not all that memorable this time around, either.
If you had fond memories of the first "Anchorman" movie, this installment might disappoint you, only see it at matinee prices.
I was actually hoping for some funny outtake footage during the credits, but was also disappointed by what they showed at the very end of the credits.
I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.

Comedy sequels are tricky. It's nowhere near as good as the original Anchorman, but nowhere near as bad as, say, Hangover II.
And yes, the Carell/Wiig stuff is a complete waste of time. The movie stops dead in its tracks during their scenes. They should have been cut to get the running time down.

Saw it yesterday and overall I thought it was OK. It wasn't as funny as the first movie but it was still entertaining enough. I would probably give it about a 3/5. The core cast still has good charisma together and Megan Good was a nice addition.
I agree though that the movie did seem overly long. If they cut about ten-fifteen minutes it would have helped the movie out. I agree that Kristen Wiig's character really should have been cut. The movie comes to a screeching halt during her scenes with Brick.

I don't have much to add except that the film was all over the place and had they made most scenes a beat or two shorter, it would have been funnier.
And holy shit, Dylan Baker looked and sounded like Ed Helms so much in this I was semi-convinced they occasionally swapped in Helms for the hell of it.

I never saw the first one.
I liked this one, but it seems like they sort of had three very different script drafts and took the different acts from the different scripts. The final conflict was funny but it didn't really fit with the preceding hour or so. And even within itself it changed tones a few times (the Vaughn part for example).
I was surprised at the outcome of JL's action.
And yes, the Wiig/Brick subplot didn't really add much.

First movie was better. This one had too much wishy washyness into their personal lives. Seriously Paul Rudd was the best one.

Surprised this didn't beat Hobbit this past weekend. Listening to all the buzz one would have thought it might open bigger than Hangover 2.

Yea there has to be a sick feeling about that low opening. Granted the movie mostly had free press and only a $50 mill budget but still. This should have opened north of $50 mill easily. Maybe it won't drop big over Christmas but this coming weekend has to have everyone on egg shells. Before it opened it had been talked about being a triliogy topping $200 million etc...

I wonder what McKay and Farrell will do with the DVD commentary. The first one's is epic. Almost as good as the movie.

I didn't expect this to be a huge hit but I wouldn't worry about it. It already tripled the lifetime international take of the original and it's only been a few days (in only a few markets).
