Am I the only one who thinks Scorsese has been largely underwhelming since Gangs of New York? I'd like to see a return to form, but these reviews aren't encouraging me since a lot of people said good things about The Departed as well.

His last few have focused more on the plots than the characters and lifestyles, which is why most of his older movies worked so well. So honestly, I think this has a great shot at being a return to form
Though I never did see Hugo.

I think The Departed is great, and Hugo even better. It's difficult to gauge him at this point, as he has set the bar so high.

There was a time in the early 1990s when I thought Scorsese, Oliver Stone and Spike Lee were the greatest working American filmmakers. That all changed by the late '90s.

Hugo is a masterpiece, a love letter to film. Shutter Island was also great and it was Scorsese doing horror.

Hugo was awesome. It had shit trailers but the film was a wonderful and loving tribute to the history of film.
I've mostly liked all his films in the more modern period of his work. Gangs is a flawed film though. I wouldn't blame on it his direction though. That shit was solid. More like issues with the script and casting. Really, Marty? Diaz in your film? DiCaprio acting against DDL? He wasn't as strong as he was now but even now DiCaprio can't face off DDL.
It's an epic with flaws that resonate. Otherwise I've no grand issue with the films after Gangs. Though The Departed was overrated and at times trying too hard. Loved Shutter Island, pretty old school.

Indeed. Though sometimes I feel the film should have ended when the camera goes in close to Hughes eyes once he got the Hercules in the air. Something about that bit made it feel like a finale but then it kept going just a bit longer to a point where I felt it didn't need to. But...the character needed that cuz he did end up all fucked up.

I liked Shutter Island but I liked it even better when it was called The Ninth Configuration.

We need a remastered Blu-ray so bad for that one! Hell, I'll take an anamorphic version DVD!

Poor DiCaprio though. I like the guy but goddamn. He was NOWHERE near what was needed to be against DDL. And Diaz...is... well she's shit.

I couldn't believe the similarities when I was watching Shutter Island. It's almost a complete rip-off, albeit with better production values and the A-list cast.

Now it's The Coen Bros, Steven Soderbergh, and Woody Allen.

Some editing would have been a god send to trim it down to 2 hours 30 mins. It did felt a little long after they repeat the same negative consequences of Jordan's actions over and over again. With just that little faster pace, it would have been much more enjoyable. Overall, it's a pretty predictable film. How DID it avoided NC-17 rating I'll never understand. MPAA definitely fucked it up this time. This film made Showgirls look like a sesame street picture. It literally had everything that is just begging for a NC-17, drugs, violence, penis, vagina, full frontal nudity of both sexes, several orgies and fuck or fucking every other minutes. Although I would have to give credit to Scorsese for not showing the end of the film in the first 3 minutes and then tell the story from the beginning. That tactic piss me off to no end.

Martin Scorsese director/ co-producer & Leonardo DiCaprio star / co-producer with a film that cost $100,000,000 to make, that's why.
That troublemaker Billy Friedkin (who's films I love) doesn't like to play ball or have the pull that those 2 do so Killer Joe gets an NC-17.
