Jason Bateman (Identity Thief) makes his feature directorial debut with the subversive comedy Bad Words. Mr. Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame. As a reporter (Kathryn Hahn of We're the Millers) attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of Homeland), who is completely unfazed by Guy's take-no-prisoners approach to life.

This showed at TIFF and received a generally good response.

I saw this at TIFF and loved it. It has the inevitable 'touchy feely' ending but in such a way that it didn't betray the mean spirited tone the film has for 90% of the runtime. Bateman is great and the kid is HILARIOUS. If you liked the trailer and dig movies like Bad Santa, you're going to like this one.

It has the ingredients of a pretty sizable hit, good for Bateman.

I'm in. I'll even make an effort to see it on opening weekend so the studio thinks it has legs.

I saw this in Toronto and enjoyed it quite a bit as well. I'm sure it helped to see it in a packed theater with a thousand people, but there were some HUGE laughs.

Saw this earlier tonight. Really funny (especially if you liked Bad Santa you'll like this). Recommend checking it out if it's playing near you or when it expands. My expanded thoughts in the video that follows if you're interested:

Just got out of a 10:15am showing - only 4 other people in the theater.
I found Bad Words to be enjoyable - though I figured out Bateman's motives about halfway through the film. The young man playing opposite Bateman should be nominated for a supporting actor award - he came off very natural. Naïve due to the overbearing parents who were only concerned about winning and the shame of losing. He played the part very well. His facial expression during the boob scene is priceless.
Hopefully this picks up steam and more people get out to see it. Profanity aside (which I have no problem with - and it never came off as mean) I found it to be a decent film with a big heart.
Oh ... and don't look at me.

Prematured Ejaculation. Can't wait until after the movie to post a coherent review?
I enjoyed it. It has just right amount of profanity but like someone already, it never led to mean spirited. Bateman and the kid had a great chemistry. Really enjoyed seeing their interaction. I like the ending as well. Glad that they took a slightly different route than what most other movies would have ended.

Funny movie. Bateman really nailed it with his profanity and insults.
His reason for forcing his way into the national spelling bee was a little weak though.
We were the only two in the theater.
Major spoiler
