Carpenter all the way. Goblin is noise to me and irritating.

Glad Goblin didn't do the score for Halloween, or you'd hear somebody whisper "MICHAEL MYERS!" every 20 seconds.

The Goblin score that works best for me is the Dawn of the Dead music, because it sounds like a parody of stock music and mall muzzak.
Carpenter's best scores don't sound dated to me, which is impressive for 1980's synth. Just reccently I've been listening to the Prince of Darkness score while walking home and man, it makes everything feel exciting!

I love them both, but while I would rather listen to Goblin as music divorced from the films they scored, to me Carpenter's music works better as a score. And since the main purpose is to be music that melds with visuals, with a film, then Carpenter gets the upper hand.

Carpenter. As much as I love Goblin, and they are phenomenal musicians, the work Carpenter did on his films is so varied yet it all retains his signature sound. Goblin does themes very well, but their music can sometimes feel incongruent in relation to the film playing on screen.
Well, most of it is stock music. The score Goblin provided was done "cold", without being scored to match the film itself. They just knocked out some tracks and turned them in for use. Romero has gone on record saying he dislikes it, but I love the work they did there.

I enjoy listening to Goblin more, buuuut Carpenter might win me over just for the Assault/13 theme alone.
I agree. But it's highly effective noise to me.
When I first heard the biker theme they composed (On Argento's cut of the film) I found it laughable. But by the time the song replayed on the end-credits, I realized just how badass that track actually is.

I came out of the theater vocalizing the themes from Carpenter movies:
"Dun-duh-duh-DUH-Dun! Dun-duh-duh-DUNNHH!!!"
Didn't do that with Goblin.

I prefer Tangerine Dream over either poll choice. I did vote for Goblin though and agree with aforementioned posts regarding AOP13 as Carpenter's best score.

Re: The Film Scores of Goblin vs John Carpenter
His Halloween 3 score with Alan Howarth has a great electronic sequencer track that plays with during the chase scenes, akin to Tangerine Dream stuff.
