That's the problem with Marvel and Disney doing multiple films per year in my opinion. I get that they want to strike while the superhero craze is hot but at the same time they could probably extend it out by having less output. The way they're doing it now I'm surprised the casual audience hasn't moved on already.

Had no idea that was Christopher Eccelston until the closing credits.

Marvel seems to be trying to utilize their movies and TV shows to make their filmed universe more like their comic. Basically, they can have something happen in one movie or ep. and then it can be alluded to in one that belongs to a different franchise. Kind of like the whole "*" that is used in comics to give an issue # to the reader when they speak of such.

Yeah I understand but it's like the old saying too much of a good thing. I just think eventually audiences might tire of the same thing over and over year after year. Especially when they're making multiple films per year. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Yeah, I disagree. Had a blast with this and while I recognize what you're saying, I still find it "fresh" , for lack of a better word.

There are issues with this but I found it to be entertaining and good.

Made $86 million this weekend. Nearly broke the Nov. opening weekend record by the last Bond movie. It's already made $240 million overseas.

I didn't say I didn't like it. I enjoyed it a lot to be honest (more than Iron Man 3), I'm just saying that I think that could be a potential issue at the rate they're putting films out and the attention span of a normal audience member.

Damn. Marvel brand has gotten stronger for a non IM related film. Makes me wonder how Cap 2 will do.

I expect every upcoming ad we see will have Nick & Widow predominantly in them. More Avengers, more sales.

I think the Marvel produced films average about 2 a year but throw in the other Marvel films (Spidey, Xmen, FF) and i can see where the "general" audience can tire of these films. Since I follow the online updates of these films, i love that all these movies (marvel produced)share the same universe and tie all together. Seems like 1 big story. Makes it really fun and different than other superhero films. I think thats a big reason these films are so reveared.

A little off topic, but I wonder if the new Hunger Games has a shot at breaking the November record in a couple of weeks?

Has a chance I'd guess how strong are the November records usually?

Re: Thor: The Dark World (Taylor, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

So I need an explanation on a major scene in the movie:

Spoiler:
I don't quite understand the scene involving Loki fake cutting off Thor's hand. I get that it was an illusion of sorts created by Loki, but at the start of the scene, Loki and Thor are at the top of a hill, with the villain seeing them from a great distance.

I can't remember the exact line, but I think Thor says something like I hope I can trust you before taking off Loki's handcuffs. Loki then says that Thor made a mistake in trusting him, and then "stabs" and shoves him down the mountain and begins "cutting" off his hand, Later, Loki shows it's an illusion, Thor has his hand, and the fight with the villainensues.

I guess my question is...it never seemed to me that Thor was ever in on that plot twist, but by the end, Thor signals Loki to give back his hand so he can grab his hammer. Am I wrong? In other words, that twist seemed more specifically for the audience, as opposed to a genuine attempt to fool the villain, because from what I recall, Loki smugly lamented the fact that Thor would trust him to take off his handcuffs, before shoving him down that mountain.

But why would he say that if the villain wasn't in earshot to hear it?

I think the conversation was only meant for
Spoiler:
Thor and Loki (and by extension as a means to fool the audience) but the "pageantry" of the stab, shove, and hand chop was for the benefit of Malekith and his entourage. I thought the scene was pretty easy to follow and the deception quite transparent.

As visual, it was for Malekith. I was fine with that. But the start of it was for the audience only. It doesn't really do anything but go for the audience. Which was neat until the reveal and then it just kind of irked me a bit.

I think it was also meant to fool Jane...if she knew what was coming, she might have given it away because she wouldnt have been scared.

I'm surprised she didn't slap Thor after that since that seems to be the extent of what she was in the story to do (other than play damsel in distress/McGuffin).

Exactly. The visual stab and fight is obviously for Malekith. But why Loki would verbally "put on a show" when Malekith wasn't in ear shot made no sense storywise outside of simply trying to fool the audience.

That reminded me of a similar scheme on a currently airing television show...

Spoiler:
Homeland

Although on the tv show they kept up the illusion even when the characters are all by themselves.

Now You See Me had that too, although I'd have to rematch Thor 2 again. I figured they were shouting loud enough for Malekith to hear them anyway. He could already see them at the top.

Well i found this whole scene very predictable, but the way i see it is that Loki and Thor discussed this on the small spaceship as Jane is knocked out. Thor says this line because even though they have made the plan he still is probably unsure if Loki will stick with the plan or betray him. It conveniently also works as fooling the majority of the audience.

Re: Thor: The Dark World (Taylor, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Now that I've had a week or two to chew over it, for me the single biggest plot hole is
Spoiler:
Jane ending up with the Aether infecting her. So we're meant to believe that Jane's investigations stumble on portals to other dimensions and out of all the theoretically gazillions of possibilities Thor's girlfriend ends up in the spot where the Aether was put and frees the Dark Elves? That just reeaaaallllly strained my coincidence meter to the limit for some reason.
