EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is closing a deal to finance and distribute worldwide Rocketman, a picture package that has Dexter Fletcher directing Taron Egerton in the role of Elton John, through the course of a most iconic life. The film covers the singer/pianist’s growth from a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to a global superstar, through his influential and enduring musical partnership with his songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin. It is an unvarnished rock ‘n’ roll biopic with John’s life stripped back of the glitter.
The film has a script by Lee Hall. Matthew Vaughn and his Marv Films is producing with Elton John and his Rocket Pictures partner David Furnish. The deal was put together by Wyck Godfrey, president of Paramount Motion Pictures Group. Production is set to start this summer.
Egerton, who has not hidden his wish to play this role, will sing the songs himself, and sources said that everyone who has heard him has been gobsmacked by the quality of his voice and its proximity to the subject as Egerton sang numerous of his classics. Vaughn has been a driving force in getting this long gestating picture to the starting line, and the plan is to start production in August. Vaughn and Egerton have been frequent collaborators with Egerton, both in the Vaughn-directed Kingsmen: The Secret Service films, and also as producer of Eddie the Eagle, which Fletcher directed with Egerton starring.
Fletcher’s association with Vaughn goes back to his days as an actor on Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and the Vaughn-directed Layer Cake. As a director, Fletcher most recently stepped in to replace Bryan Singer as the director of Bohemian Rhapsody, the story of Queen front man Freddie Mercury. He also just provided a voice in Sherlock Gnomes, which was produced by Furnish at Rocket Pictures.
John and Furnish are repped by UTA; Egerton by CAA and United Agents, Fletcher by WME and Independent Talent; and Vaughn by WME.

Jamie Bell Joins Taron Egerton in Elton John Biopic 'Rocketman'
12:42 PM PDT 6/20/2018 by Mia Galuppo
Jamie Bell is in talks to join Taron Egerton in the Elton John biopic Rocketman.
The Kingsman actor will star as the famed singer-songwriter, from his days at the Royal Academy of Music to his rise on the rock 'n' roll scene of the 1970s and '80s and his recovery from drug and alcohol addiction in the '90s to international superstardom.
Bell would play Bernie Taupin, the longtime songwriting partner of John who penned the lyrics of such classic tunes as "Tiny Dancer," "Bennie and the Jets" and "Rocket Man."
Dexter Fletcher, who worked with Egerton on Eddie the Eagle, is set to helm the biopic, which is being financed and distributed by Paramount.
John and his husband David Furnish are producing Rocketman under their Rocket Pictures banner, along with Matthew Vaughn, who directed John (playing a heightened version of himself) in the Kingsman sequel The Golden Circle, and his Marv Films.
Bell recently starred opposite Annette Bening in Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.

If you asked me to guess who Egerton was playing there, I'd answer "Austin Powers".

Hmm. You know all those movies where an actor plays a stand up comedian and doesn't get it right? Why ask and actor to sing as one of the most popular musicians of the 20th century?

Here, Egerton may not sound like Elton, but the voice will better fit the version of Elton that he plays. Similar to Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line, or Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo in Coal Miner's Daughter, which is the still the gold-standard music biopic to me.

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard.

I actually like the approach here. While I thought Rami Malek was great every time he wasn't lipsyncing in BR, the second the music would start and Freddie Mercury's voice came out, it pulled me out the film instantly. It never felt natural.

Watch Elton John and ‘Rocketman’ Star Taron Egerton Sing ‘Tiny Dancer’ at Oscar Party
By VARIETY STAFF
On a night when music was arguably the big winner at the 2019 Academy Awards, British actor Taron Egerton gave a preview of his performance in what could be the next big song-heavy blockbuster, the Elton John “fantasy musical” “Rocketman.” At Elton’s annual Oscars party, which includes an auction to benefit his AIDS foundation, Egerton sang “Tiny Dancer” accompanied by the man himself on piano and harmony vocals. According to reports, the performance was spontaneous.
The film also stars Jamie Bell (as John’s longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin), Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard; English actor Dexter Fletcher, who also worked with Egerton on “Eddie the Eagle,” directs.
While recent years have seen a bounty of music-related biopics such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Netflix’s forthcoming Motley Crue biopic “The Dirt,” Egerton stresses that’s not what “Rocketman” is. “Everyone thinks it’s a biopic. It isn’t. It’s a fantasy musical,” he told Collider last May. “So it’s actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments. He’s not the only character that sings.” Indeed, a couple of the moments in the new trailer show musical-style moments and routines.
Much like Bradley Cooper’s famous insistence that all vocal performances in “A Star Is Born” be performed live, Egerton told Collider, “I will always be singing on set. No miming. I’m just not interested in doing it that way.”
Egerton will also appear as the title character in the upcoming Otto Bathurst film “Robin Hood” alongside Jamie Dornan and Jamie Foxx.
“Rocketman” hits theaters on May 31, 2019.
