guys, please keep that discussion out of this thread. pm a mod to get more answers, if any. i simply put it up in the attention banner so the others would watch themselves in these threads from now on. may work, may not...

This movie has been getting high praise but I don't see many people posting about it.

People here love the lead, he is so under appreciated but well loved, and Fassbedender. So it'll get a proper amount of attention here. Not Avengers attention but some good attention.

Doesn't seem to have a wide release yet? Not seeing it playing by me. Looking forward to it when it is. Reviews have been stellar.

Oh yeah, there will be some interest due to the people involved. From what I've read it's a great film but tough to watch. But one never knows ... it could very well catch on and get a wider release. I'm not sure I have seen a trailer now that I think about it.

I haven't seen this yet, but likely will at some point. But, it's is always a rare and monumental ocassion that I find myself agreeing with Armond White (America's #1 Well-Intentioned/Misunderstood/Failed Troll), but his review of the film touches on a lot of the issues I have with "message pictures" of modern Hollywood and while, his reputation generally and in part, justifiably, causes people to immediately discount his criticism, this piece is well written and well thought out.

I have not yet seen 12 Years a Slave so I can't argue with Armond White about that one. He also hated Hunger & Shame which IMO are 2 of the best films of the last 5 years. If 12 YAS is as good as McQeen's first 2 theN Mr. White's opinion don't mean shit to me.

I think it should be against forum rules for anyone to link to an Armond White review

Re: 12 Years a Slave (McQueen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
He is film criticism's last hope, as sad as that is.
He is trying so hard to incite people into caring about films and discussing them intelligently. I am convinced he does not believe 90% of what he writes, but is knowingly trolling to try to get people to debate him. The man knows a lot about film history and cinema generally, but he is willfully using his knowledge to seem ignorant enough to get people to engage him. Only, in a rotten tomatoes world, people will only engage him on the "new terms" for discussing films, which is fanboy rage or with meaningless aggregated "scores."
But, every now and then he actually sprinkles something valid into his trolling and in this case, his opinions on the larger genre of Hollywood message pictures being put out these days and garnering popularity and praise are ones I can get behind. I find crap like The Help and Blind Side downright offensive, not as an African American (I'm white), but solely as a film fan. They're reductive.
Now, I enjoyed Shame, was not interested in Hunger and will see 12 Years a Slave and give it a fair shot. But, White's criticism here is far more grounded than his usual ramblings.
