Yeah kind of in the same boat with Zodiac. Well made movie, just not particularly interesting.

Otto Preminger's Laura. I've watched it three times trying to see why this is such a popular film amongst noir fans. All the elements are in place, but I still think it's just dull.
Solaris and Andre Rublev. I tried, honestly. I really did.

I've got a good one. I'm a big coen bros fan. Barton fink is one of my all time favorites and I really enjoy almost all of their movies.
I know how beloved millers crossing is but I've never been able to get into it. I've tried a number of times to watch it over the years and something about the cast and setting are terribly uninteresting to me. I don't think I've ever even finished it.

I generally hate these kinds of threads, because they tend to be minority opinion gear grinding which often turns into arguments, but in this case, I'll give it a go: John Carpenter's Halloween. Yes, I get that much of what's cliche about it has been ripped off many times over the years by countless other movies. I get that Carpenter made a lot out of a little with the miniscule budget, and that it's been hugely influential. But the characters are almost all stereotypes, and they're all total morons, and almost nothing in it is given any logical explanation, and some of the dialogue is pretty ripe and laughable, IMO ("The evil has gone from here!"). It's entirely possible I'm taking the film way too seriously, of course, any maybe it's just the hype its developed, but it's just never lit me up.

I liked it when I watched it but was far from spellbound by it and have never watched it again since. The fact that it is listed on so many people's favorites lists has always baffled me a little. It is definitely not one of the best 2-3 films that Fincher has ever made.Originally Posted by GoldenJCJ
Zodiac I saw it when it was in theaters and didn't really care for it. Then after a few years of hearing what a near masterpiece it is I thought maybe I missed something special on my first viewing so I went out and bought the Blu-ray to see it again. After the second viewing I have just about the same opinion. It's just too long and boring. After about the third time we see Jake Gyllenhaal sitting in a diner poring over old files I start to tune out.

When I first saw it in the movie theater I thought it was OK. I gave it another try on DVD and was completely mesmerized, from the great acting to the meticulousness of Fincher's direction. IMO it is Fincher's best film.Originally Posted by jfoobar

Skyfall and Elysium. Two films I had huge expectations for and after seeing them thought "meh". Disappointed that they just turned out OK, average, mediocre, etc.

The Thin Red Line - Bored me to tears. Come to think of it anything by Terrence Malik is overated IMHO.
Dances With Wolves - I don't get the love.
Scarface - As I've grown older I have found that I can no longer sit through this movie. It is inferior to sooo many ganster movies I would rather watch
Rushmore - Another on that doesn't click with me. - I prefer Some of Wes anderson's other quirky films
Avatar - I've tried to watch it multiple times and I just become soooo bored. I mostly fall asleep.

The start of the movie depicting Omaha beach was very good. Then it just went to a standard cliche USA war movie. There were much better films from the 50s and 60s about WWII.Originally Posted by Abob Teff
I'll see that and raise you Saving Private Ryan. A technically sound film with harrowing results (to the viewer). I found the story to be ham-handed and Tom Hanks to be distracting.

Oh yeah, I tried my best to like Source Code and District 9. I like the stories from both but found both movies brutally boring.

I see where you're coming from with it not being completely original, but the idea of Michael Myers really hadn't been done before in movies - a guy killing people for no discernible reason, emotionless, and relentless. Plus the film oozed with atmosphere, thanks to a relentless film score. The characters, while somewhat stereotypical, were acted in a very natural way. I didn't see any of the girls overacting. Loomis is over the top, that's kind of the point. He's the only one who truly understands what Michael is, and he's haunted by him and terrified about what Michael will do.Originally Posted by hanshotfirst113

But hey, you like what you like, and vice versa.

I really like Halloween for the fact that John Carpenter made a very artistic horror movie on such a low budget that drove home it's message with no blood and guts. Can't say anything good about the sequels except for Halloween III which was not bad but could have been better.

I really tried to like Zodiac considering I'm a huge fan of Fincher and think Gyllenhaal and Downey Jr. are two of the best actors working today. I even find the story of the Zodiac Killer to be truly fascinating so it should have been a no brainer that I would like it but even though all the pieces are there to make me like it I just can't. Of course I also think Fincher's best film is A Curious Case of Benjamin Button so I'm in the minority on opinions of Fincher's films.

I would not put it in Fincher's top 5 but as hokey as it is, I actually liked The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I think that in the hands of another director I would not be saying that.Originally Posted by GoldenJCJ

I can see why some might not like Zodiac due to it's slow pace and the fact that it's left unresolved (obviously) but I love the film and find it to be Fincher's best as well as one of my favorite films in general. Love everything about it from the acting of Gyllenhall and Downey Jr. to the atmosphere of the film and Fincher's direction, plus the real story is really interesting to me as well. Just a really well made film. I tend to enjoy slow burn crime films though so that may be partly why I like it too.Originally Posted by GoldenJCJ

I just tried watching Jacques Tati's "Playtime." I really wanted to like it, I tried hard, but only made it to the 70 minute mark. It was a laborous experience. Just unimaginely dull. And nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is.

i don't know what it is. maybe the performances are so generic and i wasn't too horrified by the shape or something.
just doesn't click as much as i try to really like it...

Watched it. Decided it is one of my least favorite movies ever. I have absolutely no idea why people like it. None at all.
