Troll Hunter (US remake) (D: Neil Marshall)

Neil Marshall has been set to direct Troll Hunter, the remake of the Norwegian film that IMG Global is financing. The Marc Haimes-scripted film is gearing toward an early 2014 production start, while there’s still snow on the ground in the locations where they will shoot.

That means that Marshall starts work on the $25 million film as soon as he returns from Ireland, where he is shooting next season’s biggest episode of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, one that is on the scale of the “Blackwater” episode he directed, which featured one of the most ambitious battle scenes I’ve ever seen on television. Marshall also directed the pilot episode of Black Sails for Michael Bay and Starz, which airs in 2014 and has already been picked up for a second season by the network. Marshall will do a director’s pass on the script by Haimes, who recently sold an untitled pitch to Paramount with Mary Parent producing.

Troll Hunter is being produced by 1492′s Christopher Columbus and Michael Barnathan and CJ Entertainment, along with the film’s original producers John Jacobsen and Sveinung Golimo. Marshall takes over an earlier script draft from Marc Haimes. They will aim high for the male lead, looking for a star not normally associated with the genre.

The André Øvredal-directed 2010 Norwegian original Trollhunter focused on a group of students investigating a series of mysterious bear killings. They follow a mysterious hunter into the deep woods, learning along the way that he is a troll hunter, and that the creatures killing those bears might not confine their appetites to that species only.

Marshall, best known for such edgy genre fare as Centurion, The Descent, Doomsday and Dog Soldiers, is repped by Principato Young Entertainment, Resolution and Carlos Goodman.
Well sure as hell got me interested in this. Wouldn't go near it at all originally cuz of Columbus' possibility of directing it. He's medicore and unimaginative as hell.

Also their search for a non genre actor is interesting. While I'm not comfortable with a US remake of this and confused how this fits into US culture, Marshall doing this is a good thing. I like his direction. Still never seen Dog Soldiers. LOVED The Descent like crazy. Really dug Doomsday and Centurion. How was the BD of DS and in comparison to his other works where does that stand?

The original was only so-so. Color me not excited.

I really liked the original. Thought it was pretty cool. Story wasn't amazing and I don't think it needed to be but it was pretty cool.

The concept was cool but, honestly, I hated all the characters and was tired of spending time with them. The designs of the trolls were cool but the movie was a bore.

I enjoyed the original. I like found footage movies that don't look "found". And those troll designs were great.

Marshall doing this definitely has my interest.

I was talking to a few Norwegian chaps a while back about this movie, apparently a lot of the humor is lost in the translation, as well as a big point in having Otto Jespersen as the lead.

Jespersen is a comedian, somehow I know that. Never seen his stuff.

I wasn't overly thrilled with the original Trollhunter, as cool as the concept was. It didn't help either that the final super troll was the one that you see on all the advertisements including the movie poster. It would have helped to have that as a final suprise. Also the found footage movies rarely work on me (except [REC] and maybe Cloverfield).

One of my pet peeves is remaking foreign films in English, but having Neil Marshall doing this has me interested. Marshall can do a LOT with a little.

Dog Soldiers - crappy werewolf costumes rendered terrifying by directing them the right way

The Descent - I was scared before the monsters even showed up.

Centurion - All he needed was some costumes and an old fort, and poof he gives you an epic period movie.

I hated Doomsday and never saw his GoT episodes. Everything else is awesome.

Agreed. I think this has a lot of potential and Marshall is the right man for the job.

The original was way too boring... needs more explosions!
