I can picture neo-Nazis having a MST3K kind of laugh-fest watching Schindler's List though.

I always loved it because I thought it was intentionally hilarious. I never understood why people might assume it was intended to be taken seriously.

The Avengers (and all those crummy Marvel and DC Comic movies for that matter) - just seems like a movie about a big halloween costume party to me.

I think it's a little both. Sure, there are moments meant to be funny(even though I might call it trying too hard) and there are the moments where it wants you to say "Oh, fuck! This is badass!" and want to be taken seriously. I just call it lame all around and wouldn't call it funny, intentionally or unintentionally.

Casino. The movie is practically a comedy to my friends and I.

People say Titanic is good and I just think the over the top acting and special effects and funny. We had a drinking game whenever Jack yells ROSE! in college we got drunk quick. And thats a three hour movie.

I think Casino is Scorsese's funniest movie by far. I'd like to think it was intentional, but the movie is so entertaining I don't care either way.

ACE: I'm only on TV so I can be in the casino, you know that...

I went to see a sold out midnight screening of John Carpenters Halloween and a small portion (maybe 25%) of people laughed throughout the movie. Which really pissed me off.

That reminds me of reading about how people were laughing during The Exorcist.

Halloween is the scariest movie I've ever seen. Am I still scared watching it? No, but that's only because I'm older and scary movies don't affect me as much as they used to as far as scares go. Still, it's a perferct horror film.

Les Miserables.

I can respect the amount of craft and care that went into making that movie, but the singing? Oh man, I just couldn't take it seriously. Totally a failing on my part, and not that of the movie.

You mean you didn't like Russell Crowe's singing voice?

Scarface

It is a classic but with the 80's fashion and Pacino's accent it is hard sometimes to keep a straight face.

I found The Exorcist terrifying when I saw it on videotape as a young teen. Cut to last month and I found it on television while flipping through the channels. Regan's in bed fully possessed as Fathers Merrin and Karras are performing the exorcism. Regan is talking about Karras' mother, vomiting, spinning her head, etc. and my kids (21 and 18 who have never seen this) are cracking up.

I chalk it up to all those years of nuns in catholic school terrifying me about the devil. Watching it again, it has lost its punch and is quite laughable.

I saw this in the theater when it first came out and my friend was laughing uproariously throughout the movie.

You can't just drop in to the climax of the film like that. You have to sit through the slow build up.

Following up on this old post: It's most definitely intentional. Scorsese walks a fine line between horrific crime and outrageous behavior that makes you laugh through vicarious engagement. It's what we'd like to do if morality and consequences didn't exist.

On the Taxi Driver commentary he says he can't watch his old films, because he worked so hard on them and that watching them again becomes a chore. But he notes one exception, Goodfellas. And the reason he sites is that it makes him laugh. And Casino is definitely made in that same style. I think he was so happy with himself after Goodfellas he wanted to do it again.
