Re: Kick-Ass 2 (Wadlow, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I thought that
Spoiler:
only Batman and Superman told each other their secret identities. But maybe your right. I never read JLA by Morrison and everything after that. However, in Identity Crisis doesn't it imply that all the Justice League members knew each others identities since way back, during the Satellite Era?

But in the late 80s it was clear that no one else knew who Batman was. Batman even went undercover as Bruce Wayne and Fire asks him if he's as handsome as the guy he's impersonating.

And even if their secret identities weren't so secret among the 50+ membership of the Justice League, it's silly to have the members claim they went to such lengths to keep their IDs secret. I think it's Green Arrow who says that. Pretty wreckless if even B-lister's wives know that Batman is really billionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne.

That stuff has been retconned so many times that I'm honestly not sure. However, my impression from Identity Crisis was that
Spoiler:
only the oldest members (and those with close ties to them) knew their respective identities and that of their spouses. Sure, they may be B-listers to the readers, but to the characters they were well respected and long standing members.

And you figure a certain lack of anonymity would be required to ensure that not just anyone was a member of the League.

Wasn't she killed off first, then the readers found out that she had been raped? Not that it makes much of a difference.

The problem I have with IC is that they went all out to have this shocking event have real repercussions and everything, but then they introduce a mindwipe to explain why nobody remembers anything, and they don't bother to even deal with the ramifications for Sue. It's basically just a way to justify the other stuff that happens. It also robs that incarnation of the league, which despite Zatanna's wonky costume was one of my favorites, of its decency.

And then they make the villain a plaything for their sidekicks. Ridiculous.

On a side note, I had totally forgotten that they had changed the ending of KA in the movie so that the girl didn't dump him.

This film's gotta be a turkey if people are more interested in discussing a DC Comics miniseries from a decade ago

Well, this film was all kinds of horrible. If this is the guy directing an X-Force movie, then I don't have much hope for that.

Here's my review.

Enjoyed it. KA1 was way better, the mean girls stuff did not fit here, but still IMHO this movie deserved more than the $60M box office take.

Re: Kick-Ass 2 (Wadlow, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I enjoyed it too. I didn't think it was anywhere near as bad as some of the reviews seemed to point to, and I enjoyed it more then the comic. I had fun with the Hit Girl stuff that people had issues with, as I thought it made sense for what her character was going through. I didn't expect much from Col Stars and Stripes, and being familiar with the comic, I thought his screen time was just enough while his death was still meaningful. I liked the Motherfucker's interaction with John Leguizamo too, and just all the heroes talking to each other about their normal lives and being heroes. It wasn't as good as the first, but I thought it was a fun watch

Re: Kick-Ass 2 (Wadlow, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I just saw it and thought it was pretty good. Christopher Mintz-Plasse was great as Chris D'Amico/The Motherfucker. Mother Russia was awesome, and I wish she had more action scenes. Jim Carrey was really good too.
I give the director a lot of credit for trying to keep the feel of the original with the choice of music, and comedic scenes. But it felt a little rushed and the whole Mean Girls detour was a waste. And I found it hard to believe that The Motherfucker had Dave's dad killed, had Colonel Stars and Stripes decapitated, but Nightbitch ends up only in the hospital and not even that beat up looking. And apparently her injuries weren't even that severe because she makes it to the final big brawl.
Spoiler:
Hit Girl gets ditched at a make believe party so she gets revenge Davie Hogan-style? Seemed way too extreme, even for her.

Some of the weak dialogue from Hit Girl reminded me of Anakin Skywalker.

This film lacked the heart of the first film, but did deliver on action and style.

I thought this film had the heart of the first film in spite of the mean girl silliness.

I'm with you on the Nightbitch thing.

Re: Kick-Ass 2 (Wadlow, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

The reason why I think it lacked heart, or maybe emotional resonance, is because of the way things occurred so quickly. Mindy tears up over being ditched, but the death of Dave's death feels like just a prelude to the cemetery action sequence.
The first film benefited from the non-superhero scenes between Mindy and her father which makes a later, specific scene in the film, that much more powerful. As cartoonish as the first was, there was some semi-realistic, sympathetic moments. Red Mist not wanting Kick-Ass to be killed, disturbed by his father's own sadistic glee, and Kick-Ass breaking down and crying on video, while narrating what he would be missing out on life.

I enjoyed it, but agreed with most that the first one was a lot better.

I enjoyed it. KA1 was probably a 8/10, this was about 6.5/10, maybe 7.

Wish they kept Motherfucker dead though.

I'm in the boat that enjoyed it. Couldn't place Night Bitch forever but finally recalled her from the Dawn of the Dead remake.

I liked it a lot, but not as much as the first one.

Motherfucker was a good villain, I liked the scene of him thinking up comic book names for all of his henchmen.

I didn't care at all for Hit Girl's scenes with her guardian, or her high school woes. How do you live with a teenage girl that you know has killed dozens of people?

Seriously? The comic ripped off A Song of Ice and Fire?

All of that stuff felt forced and hollow.

As a big fan of the first movie, this sequel was a mixed bag for me. I thought almost everything got way too over the top in the last act, from the stunt sequences to the strange climatic battle that seemed to rage for hours.

Just finished watching this and it was not as atrocious as I thought it was going be. What I didn't like was the whole Hit-Girl trying to be part of the Mean Girls club. It was incongruent.

Night Bitch is a piece of ass, though. Yowza!

Re: Kick-Ass 2 (Wadlow, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I truly hated this movie. It felt like "Not Another Teen Kick Ass Movie" rather than a continuation of the first. The first flick was well made, has good characterization, decent action and was witty as hell. The second movie just felt like they had nowhere else to go and just wanted to get as much unnecessary violence and swearing in it as possible. The wit was long since gone replaced by teenage immaturity.

I really enjoyed this. The whole "Mean Girls" thing was fine for me and didn't detract at all. Great to see the characters again. I'd like a third KA movie.

Do you have to watch KA 1 to watch KA2?

It's a better movie, so if the characters interest you enough to watch part 2, then you're doing yourself a disservice by not seeking out part 1.
