Kinison (Dir: Larry Charles)

The life of comedian Sam Kinison is to be made into a Hollywood biopic.

Borat and Bruno director Larry Charles will helm the new film, called simply Kinison, based on the biography Brother Sam, by Kinison’s sibling Bill.

Josh Gad, who starred in the Broadway production of Book Of Mormon and plays Steve Wozniak in the forthcoming biopic of Apple’s Steve Jobs, will play the lead.

The film is set to cover his transition from Pentecostal preacher to a manic stand-up comedian before his death in a 1992 car crash at the age of 38.

Producer David Permut told Hollywood website Deadline: ‘There was nothing conventional about Sam Kinison and neither will be the cinematic interpretation of his life.

’Larry Charles is the perfect director to bring Rich Wilkes’ incredible script to screen, and Josh Gad’s tremendous ability to morph into a role will bring great depth to Kinison’s larger-than-life persona.’

The movie was first revealed in 2010, but had apparently stalled until the casting and directorial announcement was made today.

I can't imagine ANY actor taking on that role and doing it justice.

Re: Kinison (Dir: Larry Charles)

based on the biography Brother Sam
Howard Stern owned the rights to this biography and tried to get the film made for years. I imagine casting was the big hold up. I don't know who could play the guy.

I would have preferred if they went with Idris Elba as Kinison as originally intended.

I saw Josh Gad in one movie and he was annoying as hell.

Wow, they finally found someone as annoying as Sam Kinison was to play him in a movie.

A match made in heaven. I was going to respond to the previous post about the actor playing him to be annoying and thought that fit Kinison's shtick to a T.

Re: Kinison (Dir: Larry Charles)

Will they have a scene or two with Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks talking to each other about religion? I'm guessing not, but it would be a kick to see a mainstream film acknowledge Hicks' existence.

And how is a mainstream film, or even an indie film, going to fly in this day and age about a raunchy stand-up comic who used to feud with the gay community?

Bill Hicks has to be one of the best comedians that most fans of today's mostly terrible comedy have no idea ever existed. It is a shame.

Really? I feel like Bill Hicks' legend has grown beyond the actual merit of his comedy (which was quite good, don't get me wrong).

Re: Kinison (Dir: Larry Charles)

First few minutes of this is funnier than most stuff people perform today. However, comedy is very subjective so there is no need to argue. Enjoy!

Supermallet, can you name one *mainstream* film that has ever mentioned just the existence of Bill Hicks?

I'm the opposite, I have yet to see his legend match the genius of his comedy. As for Kinison, his comedy never really resonated to me. I don't really have any interest in a Sam Kinison movie. But I did like him in Back to School.

Re: Kinison (Dir: Larry Charles)

The scream is one thing. But, can they do Kinison's whinnying laugh? That's the true test.

I hope this project succeeds and I hope it's done right. Don't sanitize it for today's PC audience. I hope this project knocks the same audiences that thought Borat was edgy for a loop.

Maybe they should of picked this guy to play Sam Kinison.

I can't think of any offhand, but what does that prove, exactly?

I'm not ragging on Bill Hicks. He was a great comedian who influenced a lot of top tier comedians working today. He certainly deserves more admiration than Kinison, who was as overrated as you feel Hicks is underrated.

I think I big problem with Hick's body of work is that so much of it was topical for the early 90's period. His rants about Jay Leno or Basic Instinct or forgotten TV actors don't seem to have the staying power of routines by Carlin or Cosby or Pryor.

Sane Man covers very few topics that are stuck in a certain time period. What makes the stuff even better is that the people he mentions being on drugs are for the most part still alive nearly 25 years later. The Jim Fix stuff is still quite funny as long as you are aware of who he was but even if you don't Hicks gives enough information so that you can laugh.

My favorite Hick's routine is the one about censored hotel porno. His call backs to the "hairy bobbin' man ass" are perfectly timed.

How many mainstream films mention the existence of Richard Pryor or George Carlin?

I don't know what mainstream movies have to do with stand up comedy. It's not exactly like movies are known for trying to shoehorn in a mention of a famous stand up comedians.

Hicks legend has grown in stature many times over since his death, but I don't think movies play a part in this. People who know stand up comedy even a little. Tend to know exactly who Bill Hicks is.

^^
That guy lacks the seething intensity of Kinison. But, he's got the whinnying laugh down.

Re: Kinison (Dir: Larry Charles)

I just learned Josh Gad and Dan Fogler are two different people. Great, now I have to divide my hate into TWO actors.
