Seriously. A sub-40% drop in its third week is incredible.

Yeah, I guess the Smurfs are huge overseas, so it seems like it's really being made for that market, with anything it makes in the US as icing on the cake.

Do you realize that five of the top ten films have "2" in their titles?

One can only hope The Smurfs begins the downfall of this CGI-family film shitfest that seems to have infected Hollywood.

Seems like there's been a new one of these terrible movies ever week this summer.

And 1 of the remaining 5 is a garbage sequel to a garbage comic book film

Replace CGI-fantasy film with comic book-based

At least comic book films didn't kill 2D animation.

Re: I just blue myself — Box Office Weekend Aug 2–4

so with 2 Guns costing roughly $74mil, would it be considered a mild disappointment with only $27+ mil this weekend? it probably will make back it's money, but not great, right?

Well, depends on how it holds. Denzel Washington movies tend to have good holds, so I could see it making around $85 million (which seems to be the average for his movies) and once you add in the overseas gross and home video, it'll still be profit for Universal.

I think this is the summer where the studios will learn that having massive budgets for their movies will do more harm than good. There were just too many movies with $150M+ budgets and just not enough audiences to watch them.

Isn't this what Steven Spielberg was warning us about just a month or two ago?

I enjoy a big, silly blockbuster as much as the next guy but budgets have really started to get out of hand. There is no reason in the world that shoot 'em up action flicks like White House Down should cost upwards of $150 million.

Looks like Wolverine's drop for the weekend was 59%, which is a bit more then First Class which was 56%... so I guess it will continue to trail that movie by a bit. Although the budget was $40 million less, so I guess Fox will be happy enough.

Olympus has Fallen had a similar premise, but had a budget less than half ($70M) and actually did decent box office. $161M approx worldwide ($98M in the U.S.) whereas White House was still a bust with worldwide included. $116M worldwide.

Re: I just blue myself — Box Office Weekend Aug 2–4

Further evidence foreign box office matters just as much if not more as the US:
http://www.deadline.com/2013/07/paci...sequel-likely/

As an American living overseas I fail to understand why there's so much emphasis on US money, as if foreign inflow somehow doesn't spend the same way. All international and domestic box office ought to be reported equally somehow, I think. Movies that are "flops" in the US aren't always actually flops.

Smurfs 2 is now my 2nd favorite movie of the year.

Grown Ups 2 is my absolute fave (going to be hard topping that theater going experience!)

Re: I just blue myself — Box Office Weekend Aug 2–4

^ I realize that but let's face it, Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx aren't exactly Tom Cruise level actors. If they got paid more than a few million eah it was too much.

Actually, with the exception of Robert Downey Jr. and maybe Brad Pitt (but he also produced WWZ so I'm sure his fee was calculated differently) there really weren't too many huge stars in this Summer's blockbusters. Certainly not enough to warrant the outrageous budgets these films have had this year.

So you're the one who likes all these movies with "2" in the title.
