i'm watching the movie and i still love it as much now as I did when it first came to DVD (sorry, i was not able to add to it theatrically).

i mean it wasn't a total bomb was it? made slightly under total production costs of $39 mil.

it was such a good character study and what action was there was super.

with Joss now garnering high honors for his stellar work on The Avengers any chance a sequel gets greenlit or even a self-funded project gets going ever?

I didn't like the movie, didn't like series, and personally don't care either way. (fwiw, I didn't "get" Avengers either.)

That said, fiscally it makes sense to make one, the series is more popular than ever. Especially if it can be done on the cheap (none of the actors have gone on to become big stars, they're all more popular now than they were but none are hugely famous.)

It made $38m worldwide, but they probably doubled that with prints and marketing (lets say $70m made, the studio made probably $27 - $28m in theaters). It likely made its money back by selling rights to premium cable, basic cable, and DVD/Blu-ray sales though, how much is tough to say.

If I were a studio exec, I would throw $35m or so to get another one made, especially now that Whedon is so well known. But I'm not a studio exec, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I interpreted it as he didn't understand why the movie received such critical acclaim and praise upon its release.

We'll never see Serenity 2. I think it's a miracle you got an extenuation of Firefly at all.

Serenity was a great movie. I'd love to see a sequel.

I'd put the chances of a sequel getting made at about 10%. It probably won't happen, but you never know.

Yes, for all intents and purposes, it was a complete bomb. As you noted it didn't even break even with it's international box office included. (Budget was $39 million + P&A)

I don't see any way in hell that Serenity gets a sequel.

Saw Joss and Nathan last week at Comic-Con and this question was brought up. It's a definite no. Joss has too much on his plate right now, and Nathan doesn't like to use up much of his non-Castle time for anything other than cameos.

Alan Turdyk was also there and he seemed generally interested in doing a sequel. Nathan told him that they needed to have a talk about something he may not have been aware about.

There were rumors after the DVD release based upon the sales figures that Universal was looking at doing a possible direct-to-video sequel if the budget could be kept under $20 million.

Based upon the now, I don't see a sequel happening. Whedon might have a lot of power in Hollywood based upon his success in the Marvel universe, but this is a bigger gamble now than it would've been in 2006 following up Serenity. A sequel to a failed film made ten years after the fact that was originally a failed television show? Doubt it.

Could you see Turdyk's and Fillon's tongues protruding through their cheeks?

I came to this thread because I wanted to see the usual Firefly/Whedon hate and I see it is in good form.

The answer is "no" unfortunately. Serenity was a very good (not great in my opinion) surprise closure to a fantastic series.

But then Netflix brought back Arrested Development so... hope springs eternal.

As someone else said it's more in regards to its reception. I get the appeal of having all the Marvel characters together, don't get why people were so pleased with what was delivered.

yeah, after completing the movie last night, i am pretty sure we won't get a sequel. with such a tidy bow and popular characters being killed off, i am thinking less and less likely for this to happen.

The first one bombed but a sequel could work if made cheap and on the appeal of Whedon's success with The Avengers. However, can Fillion even fit into his costume anymore?

Shatner made a good faith effort in his movies.

If it was a show that mattered, they probably would have made another one by now.

Whedon and Nolan seem to bring out the trolls. It'd be nice if someone would actually regulate the threadcrappers. It's the kinda shit that suffocated the music forum to the point of being no more active than BookTalk.

Pretty sure Whedon and most of the rest of the cast have shot the possibility down on multiple occasions. Pretty much lightning in a bottle at this point.
