As I said in the other thread, I'm genuinely curious about this, as I hear it's more of a character study than an action film. Perhaps it would have done better if they released it in November.

Will definitely be seeing this Friday or Saturday. Was a fan of the 1st Wolverine movie, plus I like the Japan setting. Should make things interesting.

Indeed.
Kate and Leopold and Knight and Day were excruciating to sit through, CopLand, while far from great, is my favorite of his.
I don't think this will be very good, but the idea it's more character study than action film definitely makes it more alluring.

I loved Identity. It was just fun to me. 3:10 to Yuma was also very entertaining despite an ending that I found rather annoying.
I didn't mind Knight and Day though the script was a disaster.
The one thing consistent with Mangold is his movies are never overly serious, which has been an issue with some of the lesser marvel movies. He tends to keep the pacing up even when not a whole lot is happening in the script, so I honestly have no issues with him being director here. It may not be Darren Aronofsky's The Wolverine, but that could have gone either way as well.
I didn't mind Knight and Day though the script was a disaster.

3:10 To Yuma did nothing for me. Walk The Line is exactly the kind of movie I expect from a journeyman director.

I thought 3:10 to Yuma was great, and Knight and Day was decent. Rotten Tomatoes is holding fairly well at 74% and 38 reviews in.

Metacritic only has it 12 points above X-Men: Origins. I'm fully expecting consistently mediocre with occasional "good" moments, as opposed to the former film's consistently dull with two great moments.

The Wolverine has nice, tight action sequences, relying on lots of hand-to-hand combat in lieu of of flash and explosions, and it's nice to have a summer flick where entire cities aren't trashed to bits - instead, the stakes are simple and defined; Wolverine wants to protect someone and will do anything to do so. No doomsday devices, no giant monsters. In that respect it's closer to a Bond flick than a superhero film, with Logan, his powers neutralized for much of the story, having to resort to his more human attributes to solve a mystery and save the girl. It's not bad, but Iron Man 3 did it better, and after a while the sheer number of villains, heroes, antiheroes and surprise villains bog the story down, with so many plot threads fighting for dominance it's difficult to care about what happens or why. Still, Jackman's fun to watch, and Rila Fukushima is a wonderful addition.

Well that sounds good, that Berardinelli blurb. Really wish it stuck to the story though. That sounded wildly exciting of a concept for superhero film.

Not sure what Bond films you've been watching, but most of them have Bond trying to stop an egomaniac trying to expand their power or wealth. You rarely have anyone bent on destroying or enslaving the planet (I'll give you Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me, and you don't have entire cities being destroyed. This one does have one, of course, but it's Nagasaki, which kicks off the story and isn't just collateral damage.

This was a hell of a lot better than X-Men: Wolverine, but that's not too much of a stretch. Of all the comic book movies this summer, this is probably the best. (Yes, I enjoyed it much more than the bloated Man of Steel.)
As supermallet noted, this is definitely more of a character study than an action movie, so I think it's box office prospects will dwindle quickly... Domestically, I think this will finish behind the original Wolverine film, but at least $30 million.
And for the internet/nerd fan-boys out there, Darren Aranofsky would not have made much of a difference... Maybe visually, but for overall box office and general audience appeal? See Del Toro and Pacific Rim. (The Wolverine IMO is also better than that film.)

Hugh Jackman is Wolverine, we all know that. It is like watching Connery play Bond, you just sit there and just enjoy it and "Marvel" at how he was born for the role.
This was more of a movie than a total superhero movie, which I liked. The last 15 min turned more toward the Superhero which they had to do to please the Super nerd in all of us.
It was a little hard at times to figure out who the bad guys were, after the movie we talked about the motivation of the different characters.
The ending sets us up for "Days of Future Past" after the credits role for a minute or two. But, the actual ending of the movie could setting us up for "The Wolverine Solider", which could be done 3 years from now.

Sure. He is starting to show his age a bit, but he's in fantastic shape and still seems to have the enthusiasm for it. I'd give him another 5yrs (one or two more films after DOFP). Just depends how long Fox wants to push the current X-Men story/casts.
