So what'd everybody think about the R-rating? Was there anything to justify it? Wan and company sort of wore it as a badge of honor that their PG-13 horror movie got slapped with an R rating.
This movie made another $5.5m on Monday, it is on track to gross well in excess of $100m.

Re: The Conjuring (Wan, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
I honestly had no idea what it was rated before seeing it. I just assumed it was PG-13 afterwards as it didn't seem to really warrant an R in my eyes. Maybe only the big finale treads a bit into R territory, and I think it speaks to the quality of the film that the MPAA felt it was so effective that they slapped it with an R.
Those ratings really don't mean anything to me, but on second thought, maybe that's why there weren't ANY children in the audience I saw it with. And that's a GOOD thing! I should really avoid PG-13 in theaters as the non-stop chatty 11 year-olds screaming and talking during crap like MAMA was more than I could handle. And maybe now because a good R-rated horror film can rake in the money like this one is doing, studios may stop trying to sanitize everything down for a PG-13. If the R rated ones make money and the PG-13 ones bomb, it's only a matter of time before the studios take notice.

I saw this last night and was surprised how much I enjoyed it, and how much it freaked me out! I was literally scared once arriving home at midnight after the film to a dark house, and made sure to turn on as many lights as possible. Usually I'd just turn on the hall light, or leave it off since I know my way around the house and head upstairs to bed. But I was so creeped out, I had to turn on the lights.
I think the R rating was justified despite thinking maybe PG-13 worked fine early on. But as the film progressed, and it was just so intense and unrelenting, and then mixed in with the brief bits of graphic footage. I could definitely see why it was R rated and rightfully so. I do think people under 17 could see the film however and get the crap scared out of them. It's definitely a film I'd have love to see as a teen and be terrified.
But I'm glad it still got under my skin as an adult, since modern horror films haven't had that affect on me too much. The Grudge and Hostel are the only two I can think of that rattled my nerves and creeped me out. I still have not seen Insidious but will one day. I hope it's good and scary as it's said to be.
The theater wasn't to crowded, but I will say a woman sitting in the row in front of me was literally cowering in her seat, and jumped and screamed at many moments. I jumped myself at a few moments, as did others in the theaters, and it was a fun time overall.
Also, the camera work in the film was awesome and I loved the long single takes used, and how it really toyed with your expectations, and delivered the creepy goods. It was thankfully not a hyper edited flash cut obsessed impatient jump scares galore film like The Amityville Horror remake.
The opening credit title was also awesome, and well done. I was really impressed with the film.

I think I'm over horror. Which sucks 'cause I used to LOVE it
Everybody seems to love this but all I saw was something I've seen many times before. Seems to happen every damn time a new horror flick comes out.
Yeah it was better made than most, but it wasn't scary. An R rating for sheer terror and intensity is laughable.

Maybe it's just you?
I've never been scared of a horror film, Conjuring was really well made and while it wasn't scary for me it was a pretty good film.

I find most people that love Horror aren't scared by it, they just enjoy it.

It's just a matter of time before real horror fans become desensitized because they've seen it all. The people who are really scared by horror movies are the girls who refuse to watch them and hide under the covers if their boyfriend puts one on. I've dated girls who would refuse to watch a scary movie under any circumstance, no matter how I've tried to reason with them. I've met lots of girls like this, they are the opposite of horror fans, because horror films scare them so badly. I've seen so many scary movies that it's pretty hard to spook me out, and it's usually a film that relies on atmosphere and suspense rather than jump scares. It does happen, but nearly as often when I was just getting into horror and watching Halloween for the first time.
