$50 "Mega-Ticket" Testing?

I read that they are test marketing a new premium offering through Regal theatres with the World War Z "Mega Ticket".

This offers consumers a package containing a poster, movie title-branded 3D glasses, a digital download of the film, popcorn and an exclusive early screening of the film for $50.

The digital download will not be available until around the time the DVD is released.

Is this the future of the highly anticipated tentpole summer films?

That's retarded. If I pay $50, I want something substantial.

Not that I would ever pay $50 for a movie.

Maybe they'll include a handjob if it's a chick flick?

I would pay $50 if that was the only way to see the remaining Hobbit movies at 24fps.

If they offered a window prior to the DVD/Blu-ray release...say, 2 weeks, more fan-boys might jump at it.

I can't see too many films that this would succeed with (I'd like to know what they made off of World War Z), but I can see it working for Avengers 2 or the next Star Wars movie.

wow, that the most un-compelling set of extras I could possibly imagine. $50 doesn't even get you a Blu ray or a drink?

I would pay $50 to get a Bluray the day the movie hits theaters, just so I never have to deal with people in a theater again

Based upon the reception from the last outing, I think you'll still be able to see the remaining two Hobbit films in 24fps just fine. Even if it's 3D.

Re: $50 "Mega-Ticket" Testing?

I think this is a concept that may work for a handful of films each year in one or two theatres in the major markets.

This is aimed at the types who sleep over at the theatre to be first in line to see latest big movie. It's not for the average movie-goer.

I can see this working if there were something more like maybe some of the actors would be in attendance, signing autographs etc.

I guess giving you a digital copy or Blu-ray at the time of the show would just generate mass pirating so you don't get it until the the DVD comes out.

Of course if you buy and ticket and then really don't care to see the movie again, I guess you're out of luck.

Here is the article from Entertainment Weekly:

three weeks ago I would have been mighty tempted to pay a premium to see Man Of Steel a bit early and get some swag.

Thank God that offer didn't apply then.

WTF is someone going to do with 3D glasses? They're different from the home viewing glasses. And you still have to pay the stupid fee for other 3D films (unless theaters are going to waive this in the future, which I doubt).

Considering Regal uses RealD technology in all of their locations, the 3D glasses would work on polarized TV sets.

Pretty much. I usually get that if anything. At least I can get a refill on the way out of the theater.

I paid $5 to see it. If I pay $50 for to see a movie I better be issued a taser so I can zap any asshole who starts talking, texting or doesn't know how to chew softly.

maybe if they threw in reserved seating.

Movie branded glasses are collector items. Still have my Jaws 3-D ones. The sides, that go over the ear, are sharks.

I think it is a good idea (for super fans) but they have to come up with some more compelling extras than that.

I was going to post that weeding out the riff-raff might be worth a small premium in itself. But unfortunately I think you'll just get a more entitled class of douchebag- with a little more (of their parents) money to burn and maybe a worse "f___ everybody else here" attitude.

I thought the 48fps looked awesome. It's just different. Better different, but different for some is bad.

Re: $50 "Mega-Ticket" Testing?

It could be interesting if you're going by yourself. But if you're bringing a spouse and kids, what the hell are you going to do with 4 posters and 4 digital downloads? The value would actually drop after that point. I wouldn't be able to afford to bring a date.

And even if you get a spiffy pair of 3D glasses, are you going to have dozens or 3D glasses if you go to the movies a couple times per year?

This is an interesting experiment but needs some refining.
