Smith's nepotism/possibly-veiled-Scientology project fell. Hard. M. Night can't catch a break with his name on or off the marketing - time to find another day job. Or work under a pseudonym.

Trek is now trailing the last film by $10m. It'll probably finish up with around $215m or so.

HIII is trailing HII by around $100m.

Ouch on Hangover, AE & Epic. It seems that with higher ticket prices and 3D you have to fuck up royally to not get $100m on a summer blockbuster.

Is this the first time a Bollywood film has made the US top 10?

Hangover 3 is opening to great numbers overseas, so I'm sure despite the disappointing numbers here, the studio is probably happy.

Curious as to why Star Trek isn't doing better, as it got just about as many good reviews as the first one and most people who saw it seemed to like it. I wonder if it's because they waited too long between the 2009 outing and this one and interest waned?

Kites cracked the top 10 a few years back, although I think it was the edited version.

Of course it is. Similar turds like "Wrath of the Titans", "Battleship" and "John Carter" also cleaned up overseas as well.

I think people are overly cynical with Hangover 3, it wasn't hilarious but it wasn't a terrible movie imho.

Star Trek Into Darkness isn't doing better because the advertising sort of left a bit to be desired and frankly this summer is kind of slam packed. It will more than make up for it overseas.

Well, the majority of critics and the public think it is terrible. And word of mouth is crushing the movie.

I refuse to see Hangover 3 until I can watch it for free on cable. Hangover 2 was such a wretched, lazy movie that studios deserve what they get.

I think Star Trek is entirely due to it being placed in the middle of other movies, like Iron Man 3 and Fast and Furious 6.

I think Star Trek has 100% to do with the title of the movie, and I'm not referring to Into Darkness.

Then it's a double edged sword, because what original scifi title makes $200m+?

I'm just referring to expectations. Star Trek will never be an Avatar that takes the world by storm because of the name alone. The name is working against it for a large portion of the populace.

There are still people claiming it was a "mistake" to give the franchise to Abrams.... you know, because it was doing SO well before then...

Into Darkness' foreign total is $147 million and it still has Japan and several other markets to debut in. The first film's foreign gross was $127 million. Looks like $400+ million world wide is likely for part 2.

Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation (Domestic)

1 Star Trek (2009) - $274,311,200
2 Star Trek: The Motion Picture - $260,212,000
3 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - $229,227,500
4 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - $213,118,700
5 Star Trek Into Darkness - $181,156,000 (so far)
6 Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - $180,708,400
7 Star Trek: First Contact - $164,686,600
8 Star Trek: Generations - $143,280,100
9 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - $142,092,200
10 Star Trek: Insurrection - $116,707,600
11 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - $104,420,100
12 Star Trek: Nemesis - $58,440,700

Star Trek movies always made money (except for Nemesis) but were never "top tier" blockbusters. More like dependable, solid hits. At the rate it's going, INTO DARKNESS will most likely end up at #4, possibly #3. Paramount probably expected more, but they've still got a dependable moneymaker and strong brand on their hands.

I completely agree. Hopefully the suits can still see this, and we get three or four more movies from the new cast.

Am I a bad person for enjoying the failure that is After Earth?

^There is quite a bit of schadenfreude going around in regard to AFTER EARTH. I think the trifecta of Will Smith, Jaden Smith, and M. Knight Shyamalan is way too irresistible for so many.

I still think MKS has a great movie in him. Somewhere. Perhaps he needs a strong collaborator or something. But then, I thought THE VILLAGE was a really good flick and THE SIXTH SENSE was mostly overrated...

Entirely correct. For as many that are diehard Trekkies, there are just as many that would never see a Star Trek movie. I will say this, Paramount did a horrible job of promoting this sequel. It hardly registered on my radar until it was just about to come out, which is terrible for them considering how much media and entertainment I consume.

So this is MNS's fault? It's frickin Will Smith and one of his goddam over-exposed kids. I won't see it based on Smith mailing it in since... well, forever.
