Re: (low class and high score) Criterion Sheep
I agree Armageddon would be a wrong answer, but I read the question to include a plot that centered around the threat of rape as well as actual rape. So, my choice may not have featured an actual rape, but the whole movie is essentially about a woman navigating through a situation where the threat of rape is ever present and a real fear that drives the story.

Liv tyler was on an oil rig with abunch of horny guys. Either she was a dirty whore or she was constantly under the threat of rape

Re: (low class and high score) Criterion Sheep
okay, between my daughter giving me a stomach bug and me spending most of the afternoon and evening in bed last night and me washing my phone and being out of contact with everything yesterday, I am behind. So here is the list of movies I got for the Rape question. I tried looking them up at work, but the criterion website doesn;t give me enough information and i don't want to search RAPEY MOVIES at work.
Bad Timing
Eating Raoul
Fists in the Pocket
The Furies
Man Bites Dog
Repulsion
Straw Dogs
Rosemary’s Baby
Virgin Spring
White Material
Group consensus on which are rapey enough?

I don't think Eating Raoul was rapey enough.
One night shortly after, Paul leaves to buy groceries (and a new frying pan, since Mary is "a bit squeamish about cooking with the one we use to kill people") and Mary is left alone in the house. Their next customer, dressed as a hippie, arrives while Paul is gone. When Mary attempts to explain that he missed his appointment, he tries to rape her. Raoul wanders in, sees the customer attacking Mary and strangles him to death with his belt. Raoul then offers Mary marijuana and they have sex.
Stupid hippie.

"R:2. x3 Salo is 116 minutes of murder torture and rape. Name another criterion film with RAPE central to its plot. "
As that reads, I am not sure how Rosemary's Baby qualifies as I thought Rosemary conceived through consensual sex with her husband. Although, I could be forgetting some of the ritual-group stuff maybe?
The suspense and dramatic conflict in White Material concerns the "rape of Africa" politics, but more to the point of the question the constant threat of rape. This is noted in the film essay about the film on its Criterion page.
Straw Dogs counts as there was the rape sequence that was central to the film as well as the final act stand-off that included a real threat of rape and attempt.
Repulsion should count as the main character's exploration of sexuality is framed in part by her fear of rape (the hallways sequence with the groping hands) and since Repulsion is about her mental state, I'd say the fear makes it central to the plot.
Not sure about the others, but of those I have seen listed above, I'd say only Rosemary's Baby should not count as I am not sure a rape occurred or was fear/threat of rape part of the suspense/central to the plot of the film.
EDIT: After reading the wiki for Man Bites Dog, I'd say it should count as well for reasons similar to Straw Dog (important rape scene that ties into the greater theme of the film).
Also, saw no mention of rape in the wiki page for The Furies, so I am not sure what the justification for this one is. Rape of the land?

I think Rosemary's Baby definitely counts. Even if you don't subscribe to the theory that she was actually raped by the devil, Rosemary seems to THINK she was.

It's been a while since I saw this film. Just checked out the Plot description in the wiki and you're 100% right. This film should count and I might finally watch the CC Blu-ray sitting on my shelf tonight now since I clearly do not remember this film well.

I believe these three are 100% correct, rape is central to the plot.
Don't know enough about the rest.

There are two attempted rapes in Eating Raoul, both of which have major conequences that drive the plot forward.
At the beginning of the movie, Mary is nearly raped and Paul is forced to kill the attacker, which sets into motion their whole plan of offing swingers for their money. Later on in the movie, there is a second rape attempt on Mary, only this time, Raoul is the one who comes to the rescue, after which Mary begins an affair with him and sets up the drama for the remainder of the film, who will be the one to live and stay with her, Raoul or Paul?
As for the others on the list, Straw Dogs, The Virgin Sping, and Rosemary's Baby I would vote yes. Haven't seen the others.

I was trying to avoid chiming in on Bad Timing because I was the one who answered it, but since no one else seems to have seen it, I can assure you that it is definitely about rape. I don't want to give too many specific details because it would spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I'll link to this article which lays out some of the basics of the plot (and touches on the reaction the film got when it came out): http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/20...ghfilmfestival

okay, so with me being sick and the million other things that have been delaying me, i had to make a choice to either do this half assed today or spend the weekend getting it totally ready so we can do it Monday afternoon.
I chose to put it off on until monday.
Commence 3 days of complaining, disparaging, and name calling.

I can take it, but if it gets too bad, I'll start a threat in feedback proposing they clean up all the whining in this forum.
