Awesome! I always love the George Pal/Ron Ely version.

Shane Black is supposed to direct The Destroyer at some point, as well.

I can think of the Lone Ranger, Alec Baldwin as the Shadow, and John Carter. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was an imitation pulp, and it didn't sell either.
The Phantom bombed too, and that was pretty enjoyable.

Looks like the Big Trouble in Little China remake got put aside, which is a good thing.

As a fan of the character, I'm a little troubled by Johnson referring to "Doc Savage" as a "hilarious weirdo", but it'll really depend on what makes it to the screen. I thought Ron Ely was well-cast in the George Pal version, but I hated all the "camp" elements.

This has me concerned as well. The stories have humor but it's restricted to two assistants and on occasion he's been the straight man, but the humor is not at Doc's expense. The "weird dope" Johnson describes simply doesn't exist in the Doc Savage stories. Doc is not socially inept, he just doesn't care. He's is actually quite sophisticated, urbane, and super serious.

I really like Johnson and he does humor very well, but this smacks of the camp elements of Pal's version. Years ago I read somewhere that Pal regretted going the camp route with Doc Savage. It's barely watchable.

Not familiar with the character, but could he be portrayed like a Brock Samson? (From Venture Bros) Sort of a deadpan humor, no nonsense type - maybe that's what they're going for?
