Weekend Box Office (5/3 - 5/5): Cue the Internet's Crying That Iron Man 3 Flopped

Originally Posted by Forbes & Hollywood.com
The Robert Downey Jr. sequel scored an estimated $15.6 million in its domestic debut, upping its worldwide total to a fast and furious $361 million.

Internationally, the film is already its franchise's top-grossing entry.

The movie's reported midnight Friday take, which, per the new Hollywood standard, includes business from Thursday preview screenings, is likewise an Iron Man best.

The 2008 original grossed a relatively mortal $1.5 million from midnight screenings; 2010's Iron Man 2 grew to $7.5 million, but was still a long way away from the all-time night-owl champs.

Iron Man 3 was no Harry Potter or Dark Knight itself, but it did put up an Avengers-comparable number—and it's never a bad thing to be on the heels of Hollywood's opening-weekend record-holder.

On the whole, Iron Man 3 is expected to be headed for a three-day weekend domestic gross north of $150 million.

Here's a look at the top 10 midnight box-office openers, as compiled by Hollywood.com:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, $43.5 million
The Dark Knight Rises, $30.6 million
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, $30.4 million (includes Thursday previews)
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, $30.3 million
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, $30 million
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, $26.3 million
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, $24 million
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, $22.2 million
The Hunger Games, $19.7 million
The Avengers, $18.7 million

Per Hollywood.com's count, Iron Man 3 ranks 13th.
Deadline's Nikki Finke is predicting a $165-180M opening weekend for Iron Man 3; a massive increase from Iron Man's $99M opening weekend and Iron Man 2's $128M opening weekend.

However, the internet's consensus is that Iron Man 3 underperformed last night as it didn't do as well as The Avengers' midnight gross despite opening three hours earlier.

Did anyone genuinely expect the film to do $200M+ this weekend? I know I didn't.

It's fine, The Avengers tanked at midnight too. Nobody expected $200m+, I do expect around $153.7m. You have to keep in mind that this is a follow-up to a movie that was received as average (Iron Man 2) and it's only been a year since his last outing (the well loved (wish I was one of you.) The Avengers).

I remember getting in line for the IMAX 3D midnight showing of The Avengers around 9PM and the line was already about twenty people deep. By time they let people into the theater at 11PM, all 200 people who had tickets were already waiting to be let in. I got in the line for the IMAX 3D 9pm showing of Iron Man 3 around 7PM and there were maybe about ten people waiting. Most didn't show up until closer to 8:30PM. For the record, both shows were sold out days in advance.

When I got popcorn last night at 8:30PM, the theater was relatively quiet for what should've been a fucking nuthouse. The theater in question had the film playing every 15-30 minutes until 1:00am.

When we left the theater, the place was a fucking nuthouse and it took us nearly ten minutes to get out of there. Everyone and their mother was showing up to the later showings which all became sold out.

The Avengers also only had midnight showings (and later), Iron Man 3 had a more scattered approach for the evening. There's no sense of "event" to a 9 pm showing, I know it sounds stupid but there's something about midnight showings that can't be replicated when you know there's another showing in an hour.

Is that the internet's consensus?

I never expected this to hit close to $200m OW. I know there are plenty of people out there who are either suffering from Marvel fatigue, or they just want to wait for Avengers 2.

$150m+ OW is pretty damn phenomenal if you ask me.

Iron Man 3 might have done better if Iron Man 2 wasn't such a horrible movie. I am a little surprised Avengers didn't rank higher on that midnight showings list, but that movie skewed younger anyway. I don't think many parents are going to let their 10-year-olds see a midnight showing.

I don't get the feeling that the internet's consensus is that those numbers are under performing at all.

All of the film bloggers/reviewers/assholes I follow on Twitter had a "Well, it should've done better!" sentiment based upon the Thursday-night numbers.

Now that the film is looking to do $70M+ today alone and possibly $175M this weekend, a lot of those comments are now just getting pushed under the rug or deleted.

Deadline's latest update says $63-$71 mil for Friday, which includes the $15.6 mil from the early screenings. Possibly $174 million for the weekend.

I am sure a lot of movies wish they could flop that hard.

Yes. Based on those unimpressive numbers, this movie is going to tank hard.

Might as well pull the plug on the whole Marvel universe, based on those numbers.

Iron Man 3 is already in the dollar theaters in my city. Saw it this afternoon, we were the only two people in the theater.

I'm just hoping Downey has some back up plan, because I would hate to see him and his family on the street.

Iron Man 3's opening weekend will come close to matching what Thor and Captain America grossed in their entire domestic runs.

10 years ago, who would have thought RDJr would be a box office draw playing a superhero? Good for him.

Can we start a petition for a govt bailout of Disney for the $$ they've lost making this flop? Someone think of the mouse.....

I wonder what color dumptruck will be that backs up to RDJ's house filled with cash for more Iron Man movies.

Sequels in popular franchises always start out great at the box office and then take a nosedive, unless the movie is fantastic. The true test for Iron Man 3 will be two or three weeks from now.

I haven't been keeping up too closely with the summer release schedule, but the next big blockbuster is Star Trek on the 17th, right? IM3 should rule the roost till then. I think Gatsby will be divisive and not take the top spot.

This movies is bombing so bad that the makers of The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure are laughing their heads off about it.
