Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I'm ambivalent towards Iron Man 3. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Shane Black's penchance for dark humor seemed a little out of place because it was too tame, almost like the script itself was sleep-walking through the mid-section, plus some plot points seems just dumb for Tony Stark to create for himself, but it's because the writing dictates certain scenes have to happen, so the story mechanics to get there seemed too forced and contrived. There are laughs from caustic retorts, and the armor is like a separate character at times.

It was better than Iron Man 2, though.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Just got back from seeing it. I enjoyed it for the most part. It was basically Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang set in the Marvel universe. A lot of snappy one liners by Downey Jr. that kept the audience laughing. It even had the same VoiceOver narration from Downey Jr.

One of my biggest complaints in The Dark Knight Rises was that Batman wasn't in the movie enough. I've got a similar complaint here. Tony Stark spent an AWFUL lot of time outside of the Iron Man suit and when he was in it he was out again within seconds each time.

I never read the comics so I have no reference to who The Mandarine is exactly but at the beginning of the movie he was actually a scary villain. I don't really care for the direction they took Ben Kingsley's character especially considering they could have tied it to Iron Man 1 so well had they gone in a different direction.

Saw it in 3D. Not worth it. Save your money.

So did the US get any extra credit scene other than the Bruce Banner one?

Interested to see if they pulled a reverse Avengers

Nope. Just one scene.

Frankly, I thought Kingsley was brilliant and a highlight of the movie.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Just got home from this. I love it when Regal does a 9:30pm show that people don't seem to know about. Anyway...

I liked this. It was fun. I also thought that about the second one right after seeing it, but that one hasn't held up well at all. I think this is going to hold up much better. It comes close to matching the first, but doesn't quite reach those heights. Although, I will admit this one has a much stronger villain.

I agree with some of Patman's complaints. Black seems to have had his hand forced (or more likely Pearce's hand did the writing, either way...) because there are the requisite scenes of convenience and necessity that feel inorganic to the flow of the story. But at this point I've kind of accepted the fact that, because Tony Stark is so smart and creative and wonderful, he has a Deus Ex Machina on deck at all times.

Lots of hilarious one liners. Black gets a little dark, but still keeps it mostly family friendly. I would've liked to see him take it a bit further.

Downey was Downey, just he spent a little too much time as back-to-basics Tony. He's out of the suit an awful lot, and even when he does get in one it seems like he's out of it just as fast. I know they were going for an approach similar to the first film, but I need more action to balance out the endless shtick of Stark.

Pepper was smoking hot (pun sort of intended) during the climax. Even my gf thought she looked hot.

Guy Pearce gets a meaty role that isn't bullshit! This should happen more.

Kingsley almost steals the show. He was right about one thing in the trailers - I NEVER saw him coming like this.

Cheadle was good, but his character just doesn't do much for me.

Favreau is super thick, like fat thick. Is he gearing up to do MMA? Dat neck.

Bob Morton is still making mistakes on his way to the top.

Sadler as president was cool. He doesn't really say much, though.

They seemed to end the film on a definitive note. If Downey never does another solo IM film, this perfectly serves as a sendoff for him.

Yes, a small scene at the end, funny, though.

Saw it last night at 9:30PM. I liked it, but I didn't love it. And I'm in no hurry to go see it again unlike with Avengers where I was ready to go back in the theater for another screening. I ended up seeing it 4 times last year. This one...maybe one more time before it leaves theaters but I'm also perfectly fine waiting for the Blu.

The twist as it were was fine by me as I'm not as familiar with the Iron Man mythos. I would've liked to have seen more of the suits and their different features towards the end there. But Gwyneth Paltrow's abs made up for it.

I also noticed that the theaters nearby last night had this starting at 9pm. If this is a May 3 release in the US, is the 9pm show because the east coast would already be midnight May 3 so technically it is ok to start these at 9pm on the west?

They started them at 9PM on the east coast too. I'm not sure what the rule is.

4/5

I really enjoyed it. The action and humor were great and RDJ was as fantastic as always. I even liked Paltrow. I would put it behind the first Iron Man and The Avengers as far as comic book films go.

Saw it this morning. Loved it. Loved it for the precise reason that it was riddled with dark humor. Ben Kingsley will be remembered for this role for quite a while.

Spoiler:
"Theatricality and deception, powerful agents to the uninitiated, but we are initiated, aren't we Tony."

Paltrow has some stellar abs. Rebecca Hall was hot as usual and I did notice her legs were much more defined in that scene at the mansion. I was like woah, great gams.

The middle part of the film was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, though. Big time. It worked.

It really took a lot from the villain to have what happened there.

Meh.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Nothing like taking a break in the middle of the work day to run to a fancy theater to catch this.

4/5 for me, a bit better then the 2nd movie but still not close to being as good as the first. Overall really enjoyable, and even after 3 movies I still feel like I can watch RDJ as Tony Stark all day. Black and RDJ are the perfect combination dialog wise, and there were definitely some great lines throughout. I even loved the kid in the middle of the movie, where kids usually annoy me. The action is better directed then what Favreau did in the first two, and all the armors was as cool as ever. And I assume Paltrow has been working out a ton given they found a good reason to show off her bod at the end.

I do have some nitpicks, and I didn't care for Kingsley too much, nor do I think the role was anything special to be remembered for.

Spoiler:
I read the spoilers a few days ago about the Mandarin reveal, and while it didn't hurt my enjoyment of the film, it bothered me more watching the movie then it did just reading the spoiler. I hoped it would play out better, and now I really dislike that the Mandarin character was nothing but a threat in name and only in a series of videos. Kind of a cool little twist for people given the marketing and trailers surrounding the Mandarin character, but still a let down as the terrorist they start portraying seems like a more interesting villain then just the typical crazy scientist type that Killian turns out to be.

Also, I don't get the small bit with the Vice President. That seemed tacked on or part of a story that was left out, as it didn't really make sense at all and could have been left out entirely.

I also didn't care for Pepper getting the Extremis stuff in her. It made the end obvious and predictable, and didn't like how capable she was in finishing off Killian.

In fact, the whole ending seemed a bit rushed after Stark destroys all the armors. Pepper is easily cured, and Tony pulls out his power source and shrapnel. Those seem brushed over rather abruptly.

Fun movie though, nice way to kick off the summer. Glad we're seeing the 3rd movies in these series not totally suck.

Saw it today. Really liked it. I think I liked it more than IM1. But i'm not sure if it was better than it, slightly behind it possibly. I'll elaborate more on it later.

I really liked this one. Shane Black was a great choice to write and direct, and the dialogue was fantastic. The movie managed to surprise me, which I always consider a good thing.

And while Tony spends a lot out time out of the suit, I like that element. It made it more interesting to see how he handles things when he can't rely on the suit for everything. It's not like Batman where the suit is just body armor. Bruce Wayne could still kick ass without the Batman suit, but there's no reason to think Tony Stark could.

The 3D was decent but not worth the extra cash. I'm going to see it again tomorrow in 2D.

The VP stuff is explained by looking at the little girl he kissed at the party. They panned down her body showing she was missing half her leg and was probably promised she would be able to take the Extremis treatment and be able to walk.

I did enjoy seeing Tony quickly piece together some weapons from materials that he bought from a hardware store. It makes him a little more down to earth seeing him work like that as opposed to seeing him using the future tech in his own garage.

I also like Shane Black's trademark of having his stories take place around Christmas without it being a "Christmas" movie. Iron Man 3, Lethal Weapon, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang all took place at Christmas time. It's been awhile since I watch The Long Kiss Goodnight so I can't recall if it took place in that same time frame or not.

Yeah, but a brief 2 minute scene that all of a sudden involves the VP in this big scheme seemed awfully out of place, and still rather unnecessary.

IN all honesty it felt like a giant let down. The first part was great and was on track to be a great movie, then in the second part it become to focused on psychobabble and him out of suit, then in the third part it fell apart and become predictable and felt like a bad spy movie with tons of gimmicks. If he had all these suits in his basement then why did he spend so much time trying to repair the Mk42? Since when did he become Mcgyver? Third part was the worst.

The entrance was buried by the rubble. Tony asked Jarvis if it was time yet (If the clean-up crew was now close enough to the opening)

Pretty much agree with all here. I didn't mind the 3D, but my glasses were dark. I didn't even recognize Stan Lee untill folks around me called him out.

As for the bonus scene:
Spoiler:
Looks like Ruffalo's turning into the grey Hulk!

Because this was the prehensile one. He can wear it part-by-part instead of jumping into one whole. And he can--as was demonstrated in the movie--direct it to attach to someone else. It seemed like the only that he could also control "virtually".

i saw it in 3d and didn't like it. last time i felt this bad let down was for matrix 3.
what waste with what they did with the mandrin going away from the comic book.
iron man against power rings would have been a good fight.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it this afternoon. Overall I liked it.

It was better than 2, not as good as 1, and nowhere near as entertaining as The Avengers.

I will echo the disappointment that Stark spends way too much time out of the suits. Minor complaint, but I just don't like superhero story lines where they lose their powers, or become more human.
