Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Just had a gigantic theater to myself for JP3D and it was awesome.
Yeah, the "standard 3D" presentation of the film is far superior to that of the IMAX 3D equivalent. The various problems I had with the IMAX 3D presentation are gone or less severe. Ghosting is no longer an issue as it's non-existant and the DNR, while still apparent, is significantly toned down. It actually looked more "film-like" on the XD screen rather than a glorified Universal Blu-ray on the IMAX screen. This is one of the few examples where IMAX's DMR process has ruined a film (The Hunger Games is another recent example I can think of). I still stand by the fact that Universal should've given the film a proper restoration before creating the 3D edition as there's still issues with the master itself. On the flip side, the 7.1 mix didn't sound as good as the mix presented in IMAX. While the 7.1 track took full advantage of how many channels it had to work with, it lacked the punch (and aggressiveness) the IMAX mix had. If you want a great looking version of the film, avoid IMAX. If you want to hear a great sounding version of the film, well, guess you're stuck with IMAX. |

That's not worth an extra $15 to me. And is that present on the 2D disc as well, or only the 3D? The 3D wasn't good enough to make me sit through it again for somewhat more accurate sound.
Edit: Oh wait, I just got the 2D JP BD and it also has the new 7.1 mix. Score! |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Well, at this point it's not worth the extra $15, plus I'm guessing that new 7.1 mix will only be on the 3D transfer, which I'm not interested in seeing again.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I never saw this in the theater before, but since i loved the movie I owned it on VHS, LD, DVD and now BR. Although I've been against the 3D trend, I have to say I loved seeing this movie in the theater, in IMAX, and in 3D. The detail and visuals were stunning. Really nice shots of Laura Dern's ass were a bonus. Noticed tons of stuff I never really noticed before. The goo on the baby dinosaur coming out iof the egg made it seem so real. Great sound at my theater. I still have trouble with the feeling of sitting in the front row but since this was not a constant barrage of crap coming right you I got used to it.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
In a way I felt like I was watching this for the first time as I noticed alot of things in the background that I hadn't before. Largely due to the fact I saw it in IMAX, but the picture was much sharper than I've ever seen.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I'm planning to see the 3D version Sunday. I'm more excited to hear the audio since I missed this in theaters originally. We have 1 true Imax theater, but I'm opting for the regular 3D at Regal.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Saw it this evening, and I'm really surprised to see everyone talking about how good the 3-D was. I thought it was terrible and distracting. Loved seeing this again in the theater, so I wish there had been a 2-D screening around me.
For me, the biggest problem had to do with depth of focus. In so many shots, people or objects in the foreground would be slightly out of focus (normal photography) but then when these out of focus objects were in 3-D, they just looked distracting, like something was wrong instead of being part of the image. It also bothered me several times where they would make an object in the foreground 3-D and put it right in your face only because they felt the need to have stuff in 3-D. For example, the scene when Nedry goes into the cold room to steal the embryos, they put a lamp in the foreground right in your face. You can't help but look at the lamp, which isn't the point of the scene. In 2-D your eye would be on Nedry, where it's supposed to be, not on some random object that has nothing to do with the scene. The 3-D effect also had made several shots uninentenionally humorous, by sticking people's asses right in your face, like the scene when Laura Dern is walking up the hill, or most ridiculos when the helicopter first arrives at the island, and one of the Jurassic Park attendants is bending over to open the door, so they've got is ass sticking out of the screen in 3-D. Movie was still a lot of fun. I remember years ago, I always thought there was something odd about Sam Neil's voice during the scene when John Hammond comes to the dig. When he yells "Hey! We were saving that!" after Hammond opens the champaigne, something about his delivery always sounded strange. Watching it tonight, I finally realized what it was. Sam Neil does that whole scene with an American accent! I wonder if that was one of the first scenes Neil shot, and he figured he'd do the movie with an American accent, but after a day or two Speilberg said to him, "It's not working, just use your normal voice." If this is the case, you think they might have looped it, but he only has a couple of lines in that scene so maybe they figured it wasn't neccessary. Anyway, that's what it sounds like to me, anyone else notice the same thing about this scene? |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
With every good comes a little bad. I still prefer 2D however this was one of the few 3D presentations I enjoyed. I didn't mind it when Laura Dern's ass was in my face but the others were less enjoyable.
One thing I noticed, not just with the 3D but it helped, as you get bigger and more detail, the mistakes were more noticeable as well. The champagne scene had stemmed glasses right behind Hammond. It seemed more obvious in the Explorer in the tree scene that there was a cable holding the back end of the explorer. In the champagne scene I noticed the voice as well but always thought it was a bad loop due to the background noise. |

Quick question, I was going to to see this today and had a coupon for Fandango cash but my local theater doesn't do online ticketing with Fandango even though they are are their website. Am I screwed out of the 8 bucks?

Use the fandango cash at another theater. |

Use the fandango cash at another theater. And thanks for the non-answer. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I gave you an answer. Use it at another theater. Don't be so sensitive.
|
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I wasn't being sensitive. If anyone was being sensitive it was you by actually taking the time to quote and bold a typo I made even though you knew what I was asking.
You also didn't give an answer to my question. The correct answer (which I was able to find out by calling Fandango directly for those who may need to know) is that you cannot use the codes unless the theater you are choosing has online tickets set up thru them. They list many theaters but not all of them do online ticketing thru Fandango. We have several Carmike theaters in the area but for some reason the one that has the only IMAX theater in the area doesn't support ticketing online. Go figure. I was hoping you could still maybe buy the ticket by phone, mobile app, etc. thru Fandango by using the code so I could get the 8 bucks off. No go. Jurassic Park was great by the way. My 9 year old loved it and was scared shitless at the same time. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since it came out. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I'm sorry.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
No biggie. I was being sensitive to your sensitivity. I'm sorry too. Now let's get a room...

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Question about the movie itself. I had a chance to catch it on Friday night, got some laughs when Lexi mentioned the CD-ROM. This is my 5th time seeing JP in theaters!
So I read it takes over 20 years for the T-Rex to reach full size. Did they explain in the book how they got them this big in such a short span? Since I assume that all the developments occurred relatively recently, since the infrastructure is quite new. Accelerated aging or something? I read the book but don't recall if they said anything about it. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
It's been a few years since I read the book but I'd assume such a question would just fall under the "added frog DNA" umbrella explanation.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
This 3D release is out for a return engagement this week for the 30th anniversary.
I saw it earlier. Took my teen girls and a few of their friends. This movie is such a treat on the big screen. You forget how terrifying some of the sequences are until you see it on the massive screen with the phenomenal audio cranked. I took my oldest to the 2013 3D release (she was about 8) and it quickly became her all time favorite movie and still remains so. My youngest was too young at the time so it was fun taking both of them. The theater was surprisingly full. Probably 3/4 full. People of all ages came out for it. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Checked this out this afternoon and my experience with the 3D wasn't at all unpleasant like it had been 10 years ago. I thought the 3D conversion looked pretty good (as well as it ever can, personally I find all 3D to be an effect that is tolerated rather than enjoyed). I wonder if the difference was seeing this on a much smaller screen than I would have 10 years earlier. Even sitting in the second row, I could see the entire screen in my normal filed of vision, so the 3D elements weren't so right in my face to be distractions.
Movie is fantastic. I can't imagine how many times I've seen it over the years, but there isn't a scene I find dull, so it moves along beautifully. Surprised Wayne Knight's name is buried so far down in the credits (having to share a card with Samuel L Jackson). His character is in so much of the movie, and I would argue he's almost on-par with Malcolm in terms of importance. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
What I found funny...I've seen it dozens upon dozens of times but on the big screen you notice different things. I was completely distracted by Jackson's smokes. I mean I know he smoked and there's that classic shot of that cigarette hanging on for dear life on his lip, but I never realized it's every shot he's in. Chain smoker through and through.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Seeing it on the big screen allowed me to see that, yes, the movie Jaws is playing on Nedry's computer.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Just saw it at a theater I'll avoid in the future. The frame rate was off, like way low so when anything moved it had the vertical tearing. I went and complained and there was another person from the same movie who said it was giving him a headache. They said they'd look into it. About 5 minutes later the screen went black for a couple seconds a couple of times; first time the frame rate got worse, then it might have gotten better or just went back to what it was in the start. Also the movie was zoomed in so you'd get scenes where characters' heads were cut off; like when they step out of the helicopter by the waterfall or when the T-Rex is in the room with the dino skeletons. It was also too dark with the 3d glasses. I should have complained to get my money back but I was too lazy.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Was that in Sacramento? If so what theater? I’ve given up on theaters here, they all suck. Saw Jurassic Park 3D last time it was out at the Century Greenback with my now ex-girlfriend and the volume was far too low, they gave us passes afterwards which I STILL haven’t used because I dread going back.
