Also never noticed before today, BD Wong gets billing over Sam Jackson.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Saw it last night - non-Imax. 3d was sublime. The movie is still a great rollercoaster. Last night's viewing was the first time I noticed the nod to The Hunt for Red October: when referring to needing to get Alan Grant as a consultant, someone says - "You won't be able to get him out of Montana." Nice.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I doubt that would be a reference to THFRO. I think Alan Grant was somewhat based on paleontologist Jack Horner, who really does live and work in Montana. I've met him and would have taken his paleontology class in college but it conflicted with another class I had to take :(

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
If anyone is read this from Kansas City, they are showing JP at the extreme screen in Union station. I dont know ihow much bigger the screen is compared to an IMAX, but I might have to go check it out. It runs there thru April 19th.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Went to a matinee today and had a lot of fun seeing the film on the big screen. The 3D honestly didn't impress me that much and wasn't even that noticeable in my opinion. Still glad I went though and I feel the film has held up pretty well over the last twenty years.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
^ you should probably never go to a 3D showing of any movie again if you didn't notice it for Jurassic Park.
The 3D was excellent, as good as Avatar. Really enjoyed seeing this on IMAX. I was 6 or 7 when the movie came out so I didn't get to see it in theaters until now. Worth every penny (which was free with my purchase of the JP Blu-ray). |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I noticed some added depth but really that was about it. Nothing that really stood out a lot though or impressed me a ton. Also to be fair I'm never usually crazy about seeing movies in 3D in the first place and only went to this to see it again on the big screen (theater didn't have a normal showing).

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Saw this just because the girlfriend wanted to (overpaid for a small screen with sound turned down too low, which we ended up getting passes for afterwards.) Thought the 3D was OK though the picture was pretty dark where we saw it, still think it's a waste of time to convert older movies to 3D when they should be shooting more new movies in 3D! (Won't even get into how several recent 3D movies were post-converted from the get-go!)

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Saw it in IMAX 3D. Thought the 3D was very well done. Plus the film itself looked good. Much better experience than the Indiana Jones conversion.
Jurassic Park was the first movie I saw multiple times at a theater so it holds a special place in my heart. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I took my son to see it earlier today. He has seen the movie before, but this is the type of movie that should be seen on the big screen. I'm not a fan of 3D, but I feel it like it was well done here. The added depth was actually pretty cool. What impressed me most was the sound. Very loud movie. Loved it.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
How are the crowds when you guys saw the movie, is it pretty full?
|
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
For a 4:15pm showing on a Sunday afternoon, it seemed pretty full. A theater worker was telling me that there were 52 people at the screening prior.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Saw it in 70mm IMAX tonight. As a theatrical experience, it was as great as I remembered it when I was nine (for the record I saw it seven times back in 1993).
However, I was not pleased with the IMAX presentation. The image was filled with edge enhancement, and still looked incredibly soft, but with harsh artificial edges. The 3D also created some blurring in objects that lay between the planes of depth. However, the 3D did allow me to better notice background details, like how the cab driver makes a rude gesture at Dodgson when he gets out of the cab in Costa Rica. Overall, it was worth seeing again in the theater, but I wish I had seen it in a non-IMAX presentation. |

as for the film itself: "Just came back from seeing this in IMAX-D and I thought it was fun as hell. The 3D conversion was great, a lot of depth was implemented. The scenes that stood out where the tree sequence and the kitchen scene, but don't think that the other scenes weren't improved either - the 3D experience heightened the film tremendously - after seeing this, I was thinking "well I wonder what this team of stereographers could do with Peter Jackson's King Kong"? the sound was a mixed bag, I didn't hear what a few had described as uneven dialog. The surrounds weren't overbearing or loud as the IMAX-D presentation of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' - but I guess that was a good thing (give or take). The T-Rex roar though after it had the light beamed into it's eye by Lex made all the hair on my neck stand straight up. However the one audio cue/sound effect that somehow seemed dialed down was the raptor breath against the kitchen door window - it didn't have that punch as I remembered hearing it in the film's initial theatrical release."

Dodge son didn't close the cab door so the driver threw his fist up at him.

for the IMAX presentation I saw, there was very very minor ghosting, but nothing that was visually distracting. Only one scene seemed oddly out of focus, of a medium shot of Grant before getting into one of the jeeps for the tour. Outside of the IMAX-D screening of 'Titanic' - this is a close second of a film that took full advantage of both 3D and IMAX presentation specs, and ran with it! This was a blast, and I'm glad I saw it as such.
But that wouldn't have bothered me if the image didn't look processed to hell. When I got home I ordered the standalone 2D Blu-ray, so in that respect it worked. |

There was some ghosting that bothered me, Grant's glasses were not kind to the 3D effect among a few other things, but I did notice small blurring around the edges of objects as they receded into the background. But that wouldn't have bothered me if the image didn't look processed to hell. When I got home I ordered the standalone 2D Blu-ray, so in that respect it worked. personally I want the 3D bluray with the 7.1 remix which is reportedly closer to what the original 5.1 mix sounded like. |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
That's not worth an extra $15 to me. And is that present on the 2D disc as well, or only the 3D? The 3D wasn't good enough to make me sit through it again for somewhat more accurate sound.
Edit: Oh wait, I just got the 2D JP BD and it also has the new 7.1 mix. Score! |
Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
I saw a digital IMAX 3D presentation last night.
Pros:

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
If you see it in non-IMAX, let us know if the image looks less processed. I'm curious if they did separate transfers for regular digital and for IMAX.

Re: Jurassic Park 3d 4/5/13
Found a 2-D screening. There were huge-ass black bars on the right and left. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they were projecting a 1.85 movie onto a 2.35 screen, but I'd have sworn something was cropped. Granted, I was looking for it, so maybe it was just me, but t seemed like there want quite enough info on the top. I can't imagine there are pan-and-scan print in existence. Shame about digital projection, I thought the film didn't quite look right. I don't know, maybe it's me. I thought it made ages of the digital effects more noticeable too. God, I'll miss film. Or maybe they just showed a partially projected 3-D print, but I'd rather not think so. Though I have toget myself that damn home theater I was planning on for a decade, especially a BR player. On a tangential note, I was reading over at the AVS forum that there's been some controversy about the mastering and color timing on the new release, I'm not sure if they were saying it was the mastering or the print or just blowing smoke. Anyway, cool to see the film on the big screen all the same. Some great, iconic set pieces like Spielberg does best, the film doesn't have anywhere near the substance of his best stuff, but it's still a fun ride.

Ten minutes away from showtime and I'm the only person in a 420+ seat theater. |
