Re: The return of Godzilla?

I was soooo pissed when Godzilla 2000 wasn't anywhere in the Houston area that was serviceable to my mum to drive me too. I did see the '98 Godzilla....I liked it at the time. Cuz..well...I was probably 11 when it came out. It had shit blowing up and etc. I'd like to see a REAL Godzilla film in theaters. I think....I'd probably hit super nostalgia/nerd mode for that.

Re: The return of Godzilla?

G98 was NOT a good G-movie...but it was a "decent" Kaiju film in general. The sfx of the big monster were very well done.

Change the name to "Milquetoast Matt vs Le Big Preggo Iguana" or something else and everything works out just fine.

Re: The return of Godzilla?

My theatrical viewings were Godzilla 2000, Godzilla-Mothra-King Ghidora, Tokyo SOS and Final Wars. I wish I got to see some of the Showa-era films in the theatre though, even dubbed.

If this upcoming movie can come close to capturing the look and spirit of the dream sequences in the Always films, I'd be so stoked to see it. Oh please don't screw this up, guys......

I'm actually quite excited for this. Hopefully the big G will be close to Winston's design.

Yeah I saw that back around '78 or '79

I also saw Gojira (1985) and Gojira (1954 remaster they had in limited release a few years ago) in the theater.

Re: The return of Godzilla?

I'll never forget my Godzilla theatrical experiences.

The first was for Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster, and it is the only drive-in experience that I have much memory of. I was only 5, but can still picture that ugly mug on Hedorah. I also have vague recollections of a flying turtle, so it may have been a double feature with a Gamera flick.

The more prominent memory is of Godzilla vs. Megalon when I was 9. I was visiting cousins in Akron, Ohio and our parents took us to see it. Halfway through, there were some projector problems and after a long delay they ended up restarting it. When it was over, the manager came into the theater and apologized again, saying that the second viewing had skipped part of a reel or something. They said they had it fixed, and that we could all stay and see it again. So my cousins, sister, and I got to see it about two and a half times that afternoon. That afternoon remains one of my all-time favorite theater experiences.

Re: The return of Godzilla?

I got to see Final Wars a few years back in an old theater with a crap ton of smelly genre fans. It was awesome, especially when 'Zilla (the G98 critter) had her cameo appearance.

Cautiously optimistic for this new project, there's got to be some folks in the system now that have grown up with these films and truly understand what makes him tick.

It's WB and Legendary. I can't think they'd go wrong. Please for the love of christ make Godzilla destroy cities and make it terrifying. He's a monster that can't be controlled and possibly destroyed.

Well, like I mentioned earlier. I hope they understand scale. And keeping his size consistent in a large city with high rise buildings. It was some of the things in the past that I never knew how big Godzilla was supposed to be. Of course, it could turn out like Cloverfield (which is probably why they want to reboot/restart this series to begin with.)

even though it's been confirmed this isn't for the new movie it's still cool...

Re: The return of Godzilla?

I'd prefer Godzilla's face (or at least his eyes) to be a little more anthropomorphic than that.

Re: The return of Godzilla?

Yea, that design's been floating around for a while. Interesting concept art, but I think he's too angular and the face is far too pointed. I was never a big fan of the Millenium series suit, and this looks similar.

Here are a few that look cool (except the 3rd one, too lizard-like), even if they wouldn't work so well on film:

<img src=http://roberthood.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/mcveyzilla.jpg alt=gz4

This one is actually from a movie (Always 2), and I'd love to see it used:

Re: The return of Godzilla?

The first and fourth would look great. The first has him looking all sorts of bad ass, would love to see jet fighters try to take that down!

I gotta say, the more I gaze at the 2nd pic, the more I love it. Not sure if/how it'd work on film, but it's a great original concept.

Yeah, that 1st one is very badass. The 4th one is pretty traditional w/ some minor changes and i just love that clip of him from Always 2.

Yeah, he's bit..."chunkier" (man, I hate saying that) but...I do like it..just seems more..."realistic" I guess. I dunno.

Looks okay, but seems like he would have a heart attack if he tried any major action moves!

Re: The return of Godzilla?

I saw a lot of the 70's Godzilla movies at a drive-in marathon back in 1978. And I finally noticed how much footage they used from one movie to another LOL.

Godzilla was great from Gojira all the way to Invasion of Astro Monster. Anything between that and Return of Godzilla is pretty much crap. Mecha Godzilla was kinda cool but it was still weak..love the battles but..it's a weak film that only stands cuz of the fights. The earlier films are pretty good overall. Kaiju genreness and all..they were great. Love the Heisei series..it was pretty strong. The Millennium series was hit and miss.

I agree. Post Invasion of the Astro Monster it was all crappy, save for Destroy All Monsters which was okay but disappointing considering all the monsters involved. That was Showa era, correct?

Was Heisei the 90s? Those were pretty hardcore with their action for the most part if so.

Yes, that was the Showa era. I nostalgically enjoy DAM but it's weak.

Heisei was from Return of Godzilla (aka Godzilla 1985 here in the US) to Godzilla vs. Destroyah. And yes...they were pretty damn good. I even enjoy Spacegodzilla...and that was wasn't all that great. But everything else was badass. It took some chances and it worked...except Spacegodzilla...that one was too iffy.

I was also somewhat disappointed by DAM when I first saw it. Maybe because I had waited so long to see it. I was a fan of Godzilla way before the age of Youtube and mass DVD production, so me being able to see the movies was more about scanning the TV listings each week. I first read about the movie in a Godzilla book from my school library when I was eight. I did not get to see the movie until I was 19, in college, and Sci-Fi channel aired it (letterboxed, thank goodness). Granted, my interests had shifted a lot by that point, but I still wanted to see what it was like. Kind of mellow compared to what I always envisioned from the publicity stills with ever Toho monster from the Showa era going nuts. Oh well.

I would love a boxed set of the Heisei undubbed, including the Japanese version of 1985 and perhaps the 1954 Gojira as well, since that it supposed to be it's official start.

Re: The return of Godzilla?

Well it could be possible. Sony owns Classic Media and CM did all those remastered Showa films on DVD..and they were amazing. I'd kill to see the Heisei films get that treatment.
