Re: The Creed of Violence (D: Todd Field) S: Daniel Craig

After nearly a decade in development, Todd Field‘s adaptation of Boston Teran‘s novel The Creed of Violence is finally coming together, as Daniel Craig is set to star in the indie film once he wraps Cary Fukunaga‘s Bond 25, multiple sources have told Collider.

A representative for Craig did not respond to a request for comment.

Set in 1910 during the Mexican Revolution, The Creed of Violence follows an assassin named Rawbone (Craig) and a young government agent named John Lourdes as they travel from Texas to Mexico to stop a smuggling ring.

Brian Oliver (Hacksaw Ridge) will produce via his New Republic Pictures banner along with Johnny Lin of Filmula. Production is slated to start in the spring of 2020 once Craig wraps Bond 25 and hangs up his 007 tuxedo for good. The script is currently making the rounds at talent agencies, as Field is eager to line up the supporting cast surrounding Craig.

The Creed of Violence, which may undergo a title change, will mark Field’s first feature since 2006’s Little Children. He made his directorial debut with the acclaimed 2001 drama In the Bedroom. Those are two great movies that between them earned five Oscar nominations for acting, so it’s easy to see why Craig would sign on to this project. It’s an opportunity to work with another great director and re-establish himself as a gifted dramatic actor. Remember, Craig worked with Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes and Matthew Vaughn before being cast as 007, and since then he has worked with top directors like David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh and Jon Favreau. This is not the kind of actor who will allow himself to be defined by a single role. The role of Rawbone will allow Craig to push himself as a performer while staying somewhat close to his wheelhouse.

Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale had previously circled the role of Rawbone in The Creed of Violence, which could be something special in Field’s hands. With Craig set to star, let’s all hope this one finally gets off the ground next year. It would be a crime to keep Field on the sidelines any longer. Interestingly enough, Field and Craig almost worked together once before on the Showtime series Purity, though that project ultimately never came to fruition.

Craig, who recently wrapped Rian Johnson‘s murder mystery Knives Out, is represented by CAA and Independent Talent Group.

I can't believe Field hasn't made a film since Little Children.
