Thank you!!! The guy parades around Hollywood like he's the greatest actor alive, but he just plays George Clooney in everything he does.

But still, that goes for a lot of actors. Clooney is compared to Cary Grant for a reason, he did the same thing. Classic actors like Gregory Peck, John Wayne, newer actors like Samuel L. Jackson, etc.

But there aren't that many actors that can become a different person for every movie they're in. You'd think that would be the definition of acting.

I think the Godfather I & II are overrated.

Unpopular DVDTalk Movie Opinions:

Dredd is not the second coming.

I still like Kevin Smith's movies except Red State and CopOut but including Jersey Girl and Dogma.

Re: The Unpopular Movie Opinion Thread, Part III

Oh why not?

- Oldboy is a ridiculously dumb film. I watched it expecting something amazing and instead got a boring movie with a plot that came from the notebook of a 7th grade boy in his first creative writing class.

- Aladdin is the worst Disney movies in the last 20 years specifically because of the Genie. Followed closely by the horrifying "he loves me so much he keeps me prisoner" Beauty and the Beast.

- John Carter deserved to be more successful than Avatar. It's superior in every way.

- 3D has never helped a movie - not a single one.

- The hobbits are the worst part of Lord of the Rings. Whenever they are off the screen, the movies improve tenfold.

- The Breakfast Club is vastly overrated. It should be called "Five Stereotypes in a Library"

Re: The Unpopular Movie Opinion Thread, Part III

Forrest Gump is a great movie and not underserving of Best Picture (though there were a lot of other worthy contenders). It's no more a bad movie than the 1938 Wizard of Oz--both are deeply iconic fairy tale films that are also great technical achievements in cinema.

Cinephiles who rip on it are usually just trying to get easy street cred from other cinemaphiles. "It glorifies being stupid". No it doesn't. Despite Forrest getting rich near the end of the film (which he could care less about), he's treated badly by most everyone and is shown to be deeply lonely because of his mental *impairment* not because of wantonly reckless choices (the true mark of stupidity). If you want to see movies that glorify stupidity, look no further than the Jackass movies.

That whole movie is a case study for Stockholm Syndrome.

Or Helsinki Syndrome??

The genie, spouting all those modern pop culture references, certainly ruined the movie for me as well. I went in hoping for an animated Arabian Nights adventure but instead got a Robin Williams comedy. Unfortunately, though, the genie made it a hit. That's what the adults who went in droves wanted. They couldn't have cared less about the venerable tale.

It's called being a "Star Actor" as opposed to a "Character Actor". Clooney's not doing anything wrong. He's doing it just right.

Re: The Unpopular Movie Opinion Thread, Part III

Great thread. While we're being honest, for starters:

Daniel Day Lewis gives his worst performance in Lincoln.

The entire Star Wars saga is excellent. I'm a big fan of Episodes 1-3.

The Lord of The Rings trilogy are well made movies that are boring as shit and that I despise. Thus far I've taken a better liking to The Hobbit.

True Grit and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo original movies are much better than their remakes. Scarface and Cape Fear remakes are as good, if not better, than the originals.

I like Marathon Man even the parts without Scheider. Dustin Hoffmann & Laurence Olivier are great in it.
You should check out The Seven-Ups.

I've never even bothered to see it, beyond the first half during a "Dark Side of the Rainbow" evening in college.

Pop culture has filled in all the blanks so no need to sit through it myself.

Most of the people I've talked to don't consider it a glorification of being stupid. It's about overcoming the odds (which is why it's well liked), albeit in a very obvious, sacchrine way (which is why it isn't liked). I'm not a big fan of the movie, but it is well made, put technology to good use at the time, and is well acted. The story itself is heavily flawed but it's still a movie, not everything needs to be uber realistic.

Frankly I don't think Shawshank is any more deserving and Pulp Fiction didn't have a chance in hell of winning.

I don't care for Drew Struzen's posters. The Indiana Jones posters look decent but every other poster he makes just has all the characters smashed in the middle of the poster with scenes from the movie around them.

I enjoyed Rise of the Guardians more than Wreck-It Ralph.

Die Hard 2 is my second-favorite Die Hard movie.

Re: The Unpopular Movie Opinion Thread, Part III

You know that film you love? Well it sucks and only stupid people like it.

You know that film that garnered almost universal critical praise of the highest order, a slew of awards around the world, and the love of movie buffs around the world? It sucks and only pretentious poseurs like it in the hopes of getting other snobs to think they are smart.

You know that terrible film that was almost universally panned by critics and film fans? It's a great popcorn movie, just check your mind and enjoy the ride.
