When Maximus kills Commodus, one of the extras is scratching his head and just looks like he has no idea what just happened. That's the scene Ridley Scott points out in the commentary.

That guy who was in that Super Bowl ad kissing Bar Rafaeli is the king of distracting extras. I remember going crazy seeing him in Spider-Man, Austin Powers and Old School within a year plus a few other places. There's a YouTube video of him that will blow your mind with several appearances, and it's not even compete.

Here's a classic goof:

In the movie CLIFFHANGER, Ralph Waite (aka, the father from the Waltons - not really an extra) - totally smiles like a maniac when the girlfriend falls to her death at the beginning:

That was Michael Rooker's girlfriend. Waite's character barely knew her, might as well laugh it up.

Yeah, he's one of the most famous ones of all. That's his professional gig.

I find none of those extras' goofs nearly as distracting as the extra apostrophe in this thread's title.

Phantom Menace didn't have an original VHS release. It came to home video in 1999 in a pretty nice DVD. Maybe that original picture is from somebody's camcorder?

It certainly did have a VHS release (in April of 2000). The DVD didn't come along until the fall of 2001.

I also seem to remember in one of the Mummy DVD commentaries Stephen Sommers goes on a rant about how one of the extras kept ruining takes by staring at the camera. In the end they had to use CG to cloud out his eyes to make him look more zombie-ish.

I thought Lucas even said for a bit that none of the films would be on DVD until the third fil came out, since they weren't sure they would have time to do a SE right.

He did. But like so many other times in career, he went back on his word.

I'm sure he also saw high-def on the horizon and wanted to milk every penny from each format while the iron was hot. I certainly would have skipped the VHS had I known the DVD was coming so soon after.

I can't find a Youtube clip of it but I'm surprised the battle scene from Star Trek Generations hasn't been mentioned yet. One of the extras on the bridge pumps his fist in a "YES!" motion after the Enterprise destroys the Bird-of-Prey, totally ruining the joke as Data (in his hyper-emotive state) does the same thing about five seconds later. It's even mentioned on the commentary track.

I remember watching Braveheart during one of the battles(not sure where in the movie its been a long time) but there were two extras in the background prancing around and just acting strange not really fighting.

Weird, I thought someone had, then I thought maybe it had been in the article. But maybe someone just mentioned it in the comments on the article.

Die Hard With a Vengeance - There's an extra I always notice in the scene where the subway gets bombed, a female extra in a dress. When McClane is scouring the train for the bomb he accidentally touches her and she screams, and he says sorry. Then from Zeus' perspective on the subway platform, the same extra in on the platform with her back to the camera and does a sideways scamper when the train blows.

She does nothing wrong, but she stands out as being obviously the same person.

Re: 9 extra's who completely ruined their scenes

The Generations one never bothered me. It's a typical reaction to something like that, and the extra did it far less obviously, so in the universe of the film it makes sense. In fact, I didn't even notice it the first 20 times I saw it. But I agree that once you see it, it steals Data's thunder. They should have used another take.

I don't know what's worse, extras that ruin scenes or that there's people who have watched Star Trek Generations over 20 times!

And I read at the time that the laserdisc version was the last Japanese laserdisc film released.

The Dark Knight. When Harvey Dent is giving his big speech about the Batman turning himself in. Look at the moment when a cop exclaims "no more dead cops!" Keep an eye on the extra almost directly in front of him. The guy gets a closeup and has this goofy bug-eyed look on his face when he's nodding emphatically. He looks like he's trying so hard to look serious and it just totally backfires. It cracks me up every time I watch that scene.

There was also a VHS gift set.
