I'm just glad it is finally being released. I've been looking forward to it for a while now.

This get released this week.

I'm on the fence about seeing it in the theatre. I've really grown tired of torture porn/gorefests like this.

Are you kidding?

The last torture porn/gorefests that were given a wide, theatrical release were probably 2010's Saw 3D, 2011's Final Destination 5, and 2012's The Collection.

Since then, we've seen nothing but an influx of PG-13 horror films or horror films with R-ratings that really haven't pushed the rating to its limit.

I'm glad we're getting a horror film in a wide theatrical release that pushes the R-rating to its absolute limit, regardless if the film sucks or not.

You can still be tired of a genre even if the last big release was several years ago.

I meant it more as personal taste. Not for an overabundance.

I would not group Final Destination with the others.

isn't that subgenre called 'dead teenagers' ?

as to 'The Green Inferno' - I read a comment that the movie does what horror movies shouldn't do - be boring. I'm hope that isn't the case.

It looks like The Sacrament with savages. I don't see that as being terrible hard to pull off, but I don't direct.

5 was, by far, the goriest entry in the franchise in a film that included multiple dismemberments and impalements with each death including its fair share of blood and guts.

Funny how the first film had to be edited down from an NC-17 and is probably the tamest one out of the entire franchise.

It was gory. It was a great entry. But I don't really look at that as torture porn. I love gory movies. I'm just tired of the Roth/Hostel style way of doing it. I'd love to see a good slasher come out now, like the days of old. The FD is much more in line with slashers than torture porn.

Agreed. There hasn't been a good slasher in forever it seems.

Got my ticket to see it on Thursday

This film is an obvious love letter to Ruggero Deodato's 'Cannibal Holocaust' as well as other Italian Cannibal films. That's fine with me.

So is this more torture porn or just horror with gore?

I agree. I have no interest in seeing this but I'm curious to hear what others think. No offence to Roth but I'm glad his style of movie is past its prime. Just like hostel, this looks to have no story. People go into a jungle and get horribly tortured by a local tribe....are people who want to see this just going to watch people scream in terror and get mutilated for an hour?

Re: The Green Inferno (2015, Eli Roth) (S: Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Sky Ferreira)

Saw this the other night. The film was disappointing and easily one of Roth's worst scripts.

It fails to either be a solid homage to the film it is inspired by (Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust) or one-up it. The end result feels like a very low-tier Cannibal film, down there by the most mediocre films of that sub-genre that Italy ever had to offer.

The tone is all over the place. I realize that Roth injects a lot of humor into his films, but here it's so oddly sprinkled around that it becomes muddled. There were more intentionally funny/goofy moments than frightening moments, moments of dread or even scripted funny moments. It seems like Roth couldn't decide what kind of film (or Cannibal film he wanted to do). The balance of humor and grue feel very off here.

What doesn't help any of that is the cast, which at times feels like the leftovers from Roth's Co-Written/Produced 2012 film Aftershock. When the cast isn't screaming or crying, you'll cringe at what comes out of their mouths. Roth's films haven't been known for great acting, but the casts (at least in his strongest films) have always been believable. Here they aren't.

After the first (actual) kill in this film, things go downhill, which is a bit alarming because it takes 35-40 minutes for this film to get going anyway.

Seeing it again on Sunday with one of my best friends who wants to see it. Still deciding if I feel that this is Roth's worst film or Hostel II (2005).

Why would you see a movie that you didn't enjoy again? I'd just tell my friend it sucked and recommend another film lol.

I bought the tickets for a screening Sunday with my friend before I had seen the Thursday night screening.

Can I also add that the term 'Torture Porn' is by far the stupidest term I've heard to describe Horror films with a focus on Torture. All Roth & some other Horror filmmakers are doing are weaving in elements seen in 70s Exploitation films in Modern Horror films.

Are Mark of the Devil (1970) or Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS (1975) 'Torture Porn'? I wish that term would just die already. It's almost as bad as when I read a film reviewer use the term 'Gorture'.

Re: The Green Inferno (2015, Eli Roth) (S: Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Sky Ferreira)

I just got back from seeing it.

I agree with most of Asian's opinion. The mayhem doesn't really begin until almost 50 minutes into the movie and it's a 103 minute film. Most of the cast is unknown. Richard Burgi is probably the best known actor and has a brief appearance as the lead's Dad. Obviously he has a relationship with Roth being the 1st Hostel movie. I also recognized one of the leads from Aftershock, but that's not really a well known Roth movie.

Some quick thoughts:
Spoiler:
If seeing a guys eye balls getting yanked out, tongue getting hacked off along with all his other limbs while he's screaming in agony is unpleasant to you, then you should probably stay away from this. There's at least 1 other grisly death scene with a guy being eaten and torn apart alive while he's screaming and begging for his life.

I kind of liked the lead actress. She reminded me of Jessica Stroup, who used to star in 9010 and The Following. But, the rest of the cast was totally unlikable & disposable and I was actually glad to see the natives have their way with them.
