Based upon the popular anime series of the 1970s, but done with modern CG.

Not a lot to go on from the trailer, but a CGI Harlock movie? Fuck yeah!

I'll stick with the original. The appeal to me has always been the baroque animation style. CGI can't compare.

The original will still be there if you watch the CGI version. Maybe it will be bad, who knows.... but it's not like the original disappears if you choose to watch this one. Why not give it a chance?

I generally haven't been impressed with remakes of classic anime. The only one I liked that I can recall was Hideaki Anno's live-action CUTEY HONEY from 2004, which brought its own unique sensibility to the material. I wish they'd come up with new ideas that fit today's new methods. Harlock as a character seems dependent, to me, on the style of art and design developed by Matsumoto in 1978. I wasn't even crazy about the 2002 OAV remake, even though it was also 2-D animation. (By the same token, I also have difficulties with attempts to update Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes characters, as seen in SPACE JAM and LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION.)

Although I share Ash Ketchum's misgivings, I'm cautiously optimistic about this one, given I like the little snippets we got to see in the teaser.

Is this the same one they showed back in 2010, along with Gaiking (which also isn't out yet)?

Wasn't the Gaiking teaser just a demo reel?

Looks like a videogame, not a movie.
I'll pass.

That's my issue with it as well. Looks like pre-rendered cutscense from a PS2 videogame. Looks like a rental at best.

Wasn't there a live action Captain Harlock movie? If so, was it any good?

I take it you guys hated the Final Fantasy movies then? I thought they were boring as shit, but more because of the material than because of the style.

I hated and was bitterly disappointed with the film version of 'Space Battle Ship Yamato' - and as a result my hopes aren't set very high for this one.

Aw, Battleship Yamato live action wasn't good? I've been waiting for an official release, which I guess isn't coming.

We also have Gatchaman coming out. So that'll be Speed Racer, Star Blazers, Gatchaman and Harlock all getting a big screen release, so where's Voltron and Macross (a movie which would probably be awesome, and then totally blocked from coming here by Harmony Gold).

I still like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within despite it having nothing to do with the games (they should have ditched Final Fantasy from the title). It's not perfect but enjoyable.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children was absolute crap, however. And I thought the "Complete" cut was even worse.
