The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Remake (2014)
From Collider:
MGM’s remake of the 1976 horror film The Town That Dreaded Sundown is moving forward, and some major players have boarded the project behind the scenes. We first learned that the remake was in development this past November, but now Heat Vision reports that Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is teaming up with producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity franchise, Insidious) on the project. The original slasher film was based on five unsolved, grisly murders in 1946 Texarkana and became a cult hit. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is in talks to direct the horror remake, which has a script by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Carrie remake, Glee). Gomez-Rejon has previously helmed a number of episodes of Glee and American Horror Story: Asylum, and is also a prolific second-unit director who most recently worked on Argo. This new Sundown is said to keep the original film’s cinema verite style with an added procedural element akin to Zodiac. Murphy also revealed that they’re doing a “weird meta thing with it,” whatever that means. Production is gearing up to begin this spring. Hit the jump to watch the trailer for the original film. ********************************************** As someone who just recently watched the original 1976 film - and thought it was utterly fantastic - I'm confident in saying it does not need to be remade, but I am morbidly curious how they'll do it. |
Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
Never seen the original. I'll stick in that long list of films I'll see at some point.

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
I saw the original in 1978 and and it creeped me out (I was 8). Thats what I get for sneaking out of bed at night and turning on HBO.
Have not seen it since. Shout factory needs to move their asses and release this already like they said they were. |
Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
They just announced the other day that they're striking a new HD master for their upcoming BD release. I'd guess it'll be out in around 6 months.

Haven't seen the original in years. Might have to revisit it on BD. Not terribly surprised to hear news of a remake.

I thought The Strangers was a remake of this?

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
Remakes don't really bug me anymore, but I love the original film :(

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
I've never seen the original but the title made me think it was a vampire western.

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
I'm in favor of a remake that has a Zodiac touch
The main thing I hated about the original was the comic relief (Reminiscent of the deputy humor in Last House/Left) but I doubt that the trombone-kill will be topped. |
Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
One thing the remake will lack
Spoiler:

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
They can only do the trombone-kill again if they get someone famous to be the victim and have it occur at the start of the movie, kind of be a Psycho touch. Given the involvement of Ryan Murphy, maybe they could get a Glee cast member.

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
The only thing I remember about the original is the trombone-kill. Hilarious.

Re: The Remake That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
The original has occasional good atmosphere, but the incongruous humour sort of ruins it.

Addison Timlin Lands Lead In ‘The Town That Dreaded Sundown’ http://www-deadline-com.vimg.net/wp-...42-200x255.jpg EXCLUSIVE: The Californication and Zero Hour actress is set to star in MGM‘s horror remake, which puts a modern meta twist on the original. Pic takes place in Texarkana, site of the 1946 “Moonlight Murders” that inspired the 1976 cult pic The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Addison Timlin plays Jami, a girl who survives a copycat massacre at the film’s annual tribute screening and sets out to solve the mystery of who’s recreating the unsolved Sackhead murders, using clues from her own past. Ryan Murphy is producing with Jason Blum. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who directed episodes of American Horror Story for Murphy, is helming. Timlin recently appeared opposite Al Pacino and Christopher Walken in Lionsgate’s Stand Up Guys and in the SXSW comedy The Bounceback. She stars as Stormy Llewellyn in the Dean Koontz adaptation Odd Thomas, out later this year. Timlin is repped by Gersh, Management 360, and Schreck Rose Dapello & Adams. |

I still wish this was a Western that featured vampires.

Re: The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Remake (2014)
Did I see an Orion logo? Sweet.
Looks better than I expected, being more of a sequel than a remake. Might be a bit too slick, but Blum is one of the better horror producers out there. I'll give it a watch. |
Re: The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Remake (2014)
I really liked that trailer. I'm definitely in!

Re: The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Remake (2014)
That trailer was quite the pastiche of horror movie cliches while ripping off stylistic flourishes from both Zodiac and TCM... among many others.
I, for one, will certainly not be rolling out after sundown with any sense of fear or trepidation. |

Re: The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Remake (2014)
The original(first?) has some great moments but at times is very bizarre and amateurish. It's certainly not sacred so I'm not against this. The trailer wasn't bad, horror trailers are pretty hard to judge accurately, I'll probably check this out on home video.

Re: The Town That Dreaded Sundown - The Remake (2014)
This was released in very limited markets and will debut on EPIX for Halloween -- it's also available on your typical VoD sources (Cable, Vudu, iTunes, etc; ) though it's an $8 rental / $22 purchase.
This is also a very bizarre movie at times, the best I can describe it as is a self-contained season of American Horror Story in 90 minutes. It's obvious the director knew it would never be mainstream and just ran with every strange impulse along the way. One of the reviews states: "For much of the movie it feels like what would have happened if Charlie Kaufman had written "Scream." Then it becomes another dumb slasher movie." and this isn't inaccurate. But I still enjoyed it, eccentricities and all. It was really nice seeing the Orion logo again |

Do they keep the trombone kill?
