Disney should be using that eye effect on all their live action versions of their classic animated movies. It would make them closer to the originals.

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

So yeah, the big eyes were Cameron's idea from his original treatment because he wanted to see big manga eyes in a film. Ugh.

“When I first saw the images Jim put together, it was really embracing the idea of bringing in a very manga character with the enlarged eyes — which we haven’t seen since Astroboy in the 30s and has never been cinematically photo-real,” Rodriguez says. “It seemed like an opportunity to get the look of a manga in a cinematic way, and to do that Alita would have to be completely CG, and it’s now possible to bring a photo-realistic person to life. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, we got some nice big windows to view — her eyes are extremely captivating and show everything that’s going on inside of her.”

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

Oh and this:

he (Cameron) showed his lengthy 186-page screenplay along with a whopping 600 pages of notes to auteur director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado), who took a pass at trying to edit the draft into a shooting script. Cameron was hugely impressed with the result — Rodriguez managed to retain everything Cameron loved about the story while making it tighter and more streamlined. He asked Rodriguez to direct the film, launching the seemingly unlikely partnership between two uniquely creative and independent-minded filmmakers.

Yeah, this is going to end well. I’m sure the auteur director managed to bring the time down to 95 minutes.

Cameron should have gotten The Wachowskis to direct this.

That's about right but I'll wager it be from 100 - 125 minutes. Like this would really be a 2.5 to 3 hour film.

Not likely.

I'm not bothered by them either. Of course, I'm not one of those that picks apart every little aspect of a movie.

Looks good. I know nothing about the source material. Are there any big action set pieces?

1) Nobody saw Astro Boy in the '30s. Tezuka created him as a manga character in the 1950s.

2) Robots don't have souls. (They may have "ghosts," though.)

re: Alita: Battle Angel (2019, EP: James Cameron, D: Robert Rodriguez)

She's a cyborg, not a robot, but the eyes are robotic so the point stands.

What bothers me is that as much as Cameron apparently liked Gunnm (enough to write 600 pages of notes, which seems insane to me), one of his big takeaways was "manga eyes, let's do them in a film." So they make the main character CG... and everyone else not. Because of the big eyes.

The technology will work great when they make an Attack on Titan film in Hollywood, though, since I'm already creeped out by them.

$200 Million Budget???? WTF?? I know nothing of this property but when I read that and Robert Rodriguez??? Hollywood has clearly lost its mind.

While I generally think the movie looks bad, I see this falling into the same trap as Ghost in the Shell, in that, while anime and manga have a lot of geek cred, it's not something your average Joe knows anything about. Manga an anime adaptions are going to struggle to find an audience.
This.

Looking forward to this. I usually hate Rodriguez but it looks like more than a little bit of Cameron has rubbed off on him.

If they plan to do Motorball at all, as many have speculated, that should be the big set piece in the film. I see that storyline (manga vol 3-4) and the love story (vol 1-2) being merged together into a 2-2.5 hr film.

If they can do Motorball right, that action sequence would probably STFU all the naysayers. But they gotta get that right. It's probably where a big chunk of the budget went.

Fox Pushes Back Alita and The Predator, Dates Branagh’s Death on the Nile

The Robert Rodriguez-directed Alita: Battle Angel was going to be released on July 20, 2018 but has now been pushed back to December 21, 2018. The film will have some big competition on that date, with Aquaman, Bumblebee, and Holmes & Watson scheduled to hit theaters that same day.

Some of the shots with the eyes look better, some look the same.

They're really pushing it out there to die, though. Mary Poppins Returns also opens that week.

They should have hired Scarlett Johansson.

If they have any sense, they will change this date again and put it out either the following summer or maybe mid February. Putting it out opposite Mary Poppins and Aquaman is asking for a thrashing.

I think it looks great. I watched the Grace Randolph reaction video and she hints that Rodriguez cut corners on the production, because he's known to do that on projects. There's no proof, and since it's Cameron securing the funds (producer and screenwriter and it's James fucking Cameron) and is RR's boss, I don't know why that would be alluded to.

I agree about Aquaman.
MP is an entirely different audience.

That doesn't make any sense to me.
We know JC has been rolling this project over in his head since before Avatar.
I find it difficult to believe he would underfund this movie.
