True but I still found it surprising for Godard. Most of his films feature young people dying but that poor bastard still has to grow old.

I was sure Harry Carey Jr died before I was born until he died the other day.

Harry Carey Sr. died before I was born, but only by a few years.

I felt pretty dumb about it too because at Christmas we were talking about The Searchers being pretty much the greatest western ever and how sad I thought it was that Lana Wood was the only cast member still alive.

This will sound very silly but whenever I watch old movies from the 60s or earlier, I always feel a little sad that pretty much everyone in that movie is dead.

Watch any movie prior to 1990 and all the dogs and cats are dead. Jonesy from Alien? Dead.

When I watched old movies in the 1970s and '80s, I always felt some comfort with casts where the top three or four stars were still alive, like old movies with Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert, Irene Dunne, Fred MacMurray, Robert Young, Lew Ayres, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Bennett, Gene Raymond, et al. For instance, if you watched LITTLE WOMEN (1933) before Dec. 7, 1990, all four actresses who played the March sisters were still alive when you watched it. After Joan Bennett, the other three actresses all lived into their 90s and died in the 21st century.

When I watched THAT CERTAIN AGE (1938) with Deanna Durbin and Jackie Cooper in early 2011, both stars were still alive. Cooper died a few months later, while Deanna is still with us (at 91).

Re: Actors you're surprised are still alive?

Recently watched 1952's "The Big Sky". Made almost 63 years ago and both male leads- Kirk Douglas and Dewey Martin are still alive.
I can't think of any older films where the two main adult actors are still with us.

Re: Actors you're surprised are still alive?

A lot of actors in this thread didn't survive until the bump.

Mickey Rooney
Peter O'Toole
Luise Rainer
Shirley Temple
Eli Wallach
Carla Laemmle
Wallace Shawn
Conrad Bain

I had no idea that Olivia de Havilland was still up and about! Zsa Zsa Garbor and Kirk Douglas. Comedian Professor Irwin Corey, the Worlds Foremost Authority, born in 1914, is still alive.

Inconceivable!
Also untrue, since he is still alive.

Norman Lloyd, so memorable from his falling-off-the-top-of-the-Statue-of-Liberty role in Hitchcock's SABOTEUR, is still around--and 100 years old!
